The film, written and directed by Jeneé LaMarque, centers around awkward Laurel, and her relationship with her family, including her successful and confident twin sister, Audrey (both played by Zoe Kazan). Audrey returns home to celebrate their birthday, and urges Laurel to break out of her shell, which includes a makeover that leaves Laurel looking identical to Audrey. Before Laurel can show off her new look, tragedy strikes as the two are involved in a car accident that kills Audrey. But when Laurel awakes from a coma, her family tells her “Laurel” has died. The physical and emotional trauma leaves Laurel unable to tell her family her true identity, and she makes the decision to reinvent herself as the more lively twin. In the process of pretending to be her sister, Laurel goes through some loss and awakening. As Laurel steps into Audrey’s shoes, she must decide whether or not to keep up the charade, or reveal her true identity and risk her relationship with her family, as well as new found love interest, Basel (Jake Johnson), Audrey’s neighbor.
