On Friday June 26, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide, making the United States the 21st country to legalize gay marriage. In the 5-4 ruling, married same-sex couples will now be legally allowed to marry in any state with the same rights as heterosexual couples. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.” He added, “Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” President Obama called the decision history, adding, “This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. When all Americans are truly treated as equal, we are more free.”

With the SCOTUS ruling, celebrities took to Twitter and Instagram to celebrate America’s victory. Harry Styles shared a rainbow flag on Instagram, and tweeted, “Huge day for America.. Happy to see the news. All the love.” Matt Bomer and Neil Patrick Harris, whom are both in same sex marriages, rejoiced in the step towards equality, with Harris tweeting, “It’s a new day. Thank you Supreme Court. Thank you Justice Kennedy. Your opinion is profound, in more ways than you may know. #huzzah.”
