RECAP: Nashville ‘She’s Got You’

If your jaw did not drop last night you weren’t watching the newest episode of “Nashville.” With the Country Music Awards airing last week, “Nashville” fans had to wait a week to find out what would happen with all the new romantic couples.

Well, the wait was worth it with a huge plot twist that will keep fans wanting more. Before this episode we knew Juliette Barnes was sleeping with millionaire, Charles Wentworth and that his beloved wife Olivia – whom he has an unknown hatred for- walked in on the two canoodling, but didn’t say anything. Why we ask? In the last scene of last night’s episode Olivia Wentworth confronts Juliette in her hotel room saying, “I know you’re sleeping with my husband, but what I don’t understand is why you’re not sleeping with me,” ending it with a kiss.

Let’s take a step back to the other leading lady, Miss Rayna James. Her main concern this season is getting her new label up and running, and what better way than to have her first signed artist- Scarlett O’Connor- on tour with a huge country star, Luke Wheeler. However, Luke seems to have another idea in mind when he sends Scarlett the contract to sign, telling Rayna that he can’t wait to see her every day on tour. At first, Rayna seems like she is only doing it to get Scarlett on tour with a big name, but in this episode she is definitely reciprocating those feelings. As she should since her ex husband, Teddy is getting married that same day. Marrying the same woman that is faking a pregnancy and rushing the nuptials as much as possible so Teddy will have no choice but to be with her. Teddy and Rayna have had their share of issues in the whole divorce process while making the kids their priority but now their eldest daughter, Maddy is having her own father issues; trying to have a relationship with her REAL father, Deacon Claybourne. Maddy is now refusing to sing with her little sister, Daphne, at Teddy’s wedding because she thinks that the woman he’s marrying is the one who broke up her parents’ marriage.

Rayna tries to convince Maddy to perform for her father because “who wouldn’t want to hear that dynamic duo sing?” Teddy is the one to convince her in the end earning MAJOR brownie points with the female fans saying to Maddy, “You were my first girl and you will always be my first girl”. Maddy decides to sing at the wedding and while they are performing you see this sweet look from Teddy’s eyes as he watches his daughters on stage but Maddy then distances herself for the rest of the wedding. She eventually calls Rayna to come pick her up because she wants to go home and “just sit”, all while she is staring through a window as Teddy swirls Daphne around and they are overflowing with laughter. She tells Rayna wants to have a connection with Deacon the way Daphne has with Teddy, so Rayna calls Deacon up to fix everything.

Meanwhile, Deacon has been meeting up with Scarlett’s on-again off-again boyfriend, Avery to get together for his first gig since the accident. They plan on playing at a hole in the wall venue that Avery does not approve of for Deacons talent. When they get to the venue they realize that Shotgun Sals is now a comedy club but still don’t take it as a sign to leave. During their back and forth debate, Scarlett calls Avery to tell him about the tour bus and how she is nervous but excited at the same time. Nothing can go wrong- until trouble walks onto the tour bus. Gunnar who we know is Scarlett’s ex – who is also now dating Scarlett’s best friend- walks onto the tour bus and all they do is stare at each other. I’m sure at that point Scarlett wishes she didn’t mess things up with Juliette and could be on her tour bus instead. Although Juliette’s bus has it’s own mess of trouble in last night’s episode.

Juliette has newcomers, Will and Leyla on tour with her and their first stop is The Lone Star State, Texas.  In last night’s episode Will shows signs of having more trouble hiding his feelings about being gay when he meets his former flame, Brent’s, new boyfriend Craig backstage. As if that wasn’t enough later Will goes to a bar, drinking his sorrows, when Brent and Craig walk in to eat dinner but Will stays put. Two very Texan guys approach the couple with their feelings of disbelief that they would share their public displays of affection in a place “like Texas.”

Banter goes on between the couple and the angry men but what does Will do, he gets up and walks away. This left Brent to believe that Will doesn’t care about him and the camera shows him looking dejected. But then we see Will waiting in the parking lot for the two guys from the bar. Will bumps one of the guys and uses it as a lame excuse to beat them up. This leaves the audience believing maybe Will is going to come out soon and express his love to Brent but then we’re thrown another curve ball when Will goes to Leyla’s room and BAM another hook up.

At this point we already know that Leyla only cares about the fame and money when we see the encounter between her and Juliette. Juliette has been the teen queen since she started in the biz and knows the ropes on how to please the right people. Last night, however, she is fed up with “Santa” as they call him – the number one DJ in Texas- and how he treats woman in this business just to get to the top saying, “you have to sit on his lap to get what you want”. Charles tells her to stand up to him and that she deserves better so Juliette tells him “She’s not 17 and desperate anymore” and this just throws fuel onto the fire. Bobby Delmont (Santa) does not like being treated like he isn’t the boss so he is now out to ruin Juliette’s career. Since her millionaire beau will have nothing but the best for her he decides to get Bobby fired. We all know Juliette is her own bad ass that can take care of herself so she is furious with Charles and demands that he hire Bobby back and that she can fight her own battles. So Juliette again shows Bobby the power that she can have by confronting him and telling him that she can easily get him fired once again if he doesn’t give her more airplay than Leyla and that he stop treating girls like sex objects. Since she’s on her high horse of giving back to those in need she talks to Leyla in the elevator and asks her to let her know if anyone treats her bad because she relates to what Leyla is going through and Leyla responds with, “Thanks but I’m not you.”

Now, the highlight of the episode has to be the special moment Deacon and Maddy have with their first interaction as father and daughter. After Rayna calls Deacon to talk to him about how Maddy is feeling he invites them to come see him play a show at the Bluebird. Deacon introduces his gig by using a metaphor about how it’s been a while since he’s been in public and even though he hasn’t always been there he’s thought about this day every single day of his life. When he ends it with the word life, Maddy then knows he’s talking about her. Rayna is happy with life once again and she sits back and smiles while Maddy and Deacon share laughter as a father and daughter would.

Last night’s episode leaves everyone with questions! Will Gunnar and Scarlett get back together? Now that Teddy and Peggy are officially married when will he find out she’s not actually pregnant? Will Juliette’s lady love affair turn into anything more? So many questions but at least we only have to wait a week until we get some answers this time.
