Well, it looks as though America still doesn’t have much control over who will make it to the next round on American Idol. At the top of the show, Ryan Seacrest reveals the judges get to choose four contestants who will automatically make it to the Top 10. After those four are revealed, the remainder will perform for our votes! Tomorrow, Ryan will reveal the six that will complete the Top 10.

Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and Keith Urban give fast passes to emo rocker Dalton Rapattoni, Olivia Rox, Trent Harmon, and soulful singer La’Porsha Ranae.

The remaining six contestants had to recreate a favorite moment from this season so far, which makes total sense considering each singer has maybe had one “moment.”

Any way, here’s our ranking, from worst to best:

Gianna Isabella is slowly figuring out how to perform, but she’s still not quite there yet. Her rendition of “I Put A Spell On You,” came off just slightly better than a karaoke performance. Her immaturity was so evident, especially during the “I love you, I love you, I love you.” Where was the pining? It’s okay to be 15, but pick songs that you can actually relate to. Or learn to act, I don’t know.

Thomas Stringfellow, whose girlfriend broke up with him just before the show in case you didn’t know, came back again with his hiccuping vocals for “Story of My Life.” I’m glad that Harry finally called him out on his bad habit, but it’s a little too late. I really like Thomas’ tone, and if the hiccups had been brought to his attention before, he could have fixed it. Such a shame.

Guys, Lee Jean did an Ed Sheeran song! Again. (I know, it’s not really his fault.) Unforunately for Lee, his second go at “Make It Rain,” was simply not as good as the first time. He failed to hit many notes and his performance was lackluster. Keith said it was “chill,” but clearly, to a fault. He looked more bored on stage than I was sitting at home listening to him.

Jeneve Rose Mitchell took a very liberal approach to “Ring of Fire,” without an instrument! Jeneve is not my cup of tea. She never has been, and she never will be. But, I do appreciate how different she is. She’s in a league of her own. Harry said what she does is “polarizing,” which is why she’s likely to be gone soon.

The first time Manny Torres sang “Master Blaster (Jammin’).” it was uninspiring. The second time Manny sang it, it was still uninspiring. It was energetic, yes. He sounded fine, yes. He has a confidence on stage that very few other contestants have. But there was nothing memorable about what he left on the stage. Nothing stood out enough to make people vote for him over anyone else.

The only reason Tristan McIntosh isn’t lower on the list (as in, did worse), is because she’s improving. She took on “What Hurts the Most,” which Keith and Jennifer gushed about. She showed some vulnerability, and was actually connecting with the song. She made some interesting choices with her vocals that were beautiful. But, throughout most of the song, Tristan seemed to be singing from the back of her throat which made her sound, well, not great.

Avalon Young took on Chris Brown’s “Yo (Excuse Me Miss)” once again. Avalon, who has been sporting the natural look, has curls in her hair and make up on! She looks great, not that she didn’t before, but surely her made up face will probably leave some people at home uncomfortable since she swore fame wouldn’t change her. One thing that Avalon has going for her, definitely, is lack of competition. She sounded great, especially if you’re into the whole nasally voice sound. As Jennifer pointed out, she’s getting more and more comfortable on stage as well, even starting with a “How y’all doing?”

Look, Jenn Blosil is a weirdo, and I love it. I already know that people voting will likely disagree with me, though. Her bedazzled eyebrows may have been too distracting for anyone to pay attention to her performance. Jenn’s squeaky voice is one that can easily go pitchy, and it unfortunately happened here. Her performance had more depth than any of the contestants that went on prior to her, though. I hope America keeps her around longer than a “better” vocalist. Looking at you Gianna.

Sonika Vaid proved that she’s one of the best vocalists in the competition right now with Celine Dion’s “I Surrender.” It’s not secret that this girl can SING. But again, she looked scared. There was no intent behind the lyrics for her. But she’s still amazing, so much so that J.Lo got “goose-ys” (goosies? gooseys?), on her cheek!

Mackenzie Bourg is going to make it until the end. He may not win, but at this point it doesn’t matter. He proved that with his original song, “Roses.” (I’m not saying this song is about me, but I mean my name is ROSEmary.) Mackenzie’s smartest move was playing that song; we got to see what he’d be like post-Idol. And it’s good. Not only is he a good songwriter, but his voice is so sweet and soothing. It also helps that he’s a cutie pie.

Tomorrow we will say goodbye to four contestants, and while clearly I have my ideas of who should go home, I see the end for Thomas, Manny, Lee Jean, and Jeneve.

After Will’s brutal death, Emma is traumatized. After seeing her ex boyfriend get sawed in half, Emma can’t sleep and listens to the tape of her father she found in the abandoned bowling alley.

Noah visits Jake at the hospital. Seeing that he’s passed out, Noah gloats about tagging Jake’s car with “Doosh.” Low blow, nerd, even if it’s towards Jake. Once he comes to, Jake asks if everyone made it out. Noah doesn’t lie when he says yes, but Brooke quickly steps in to tell him the sad new about his friend.

After surviving the original attack with Will, and being interestingly absent from the bowling alley fiasco, Piper gives Sheriff Hudson Mayor Maddox’s take. The tape has the same date at Nina and Tyler’s murder- September 30. The sheriff takes all the new information Piper brings seriously, and eventually questions Maddox.

While Emma is trying to pretend she’s okay, Audrey and Noah continue trying to find a way to catch Mr. Branson, since they’re so convinced he’s the killer. While Audrey mentions that other than the malware, all the two have is that he changed his name. Noah quickly noted that Mr. Branson had conveniently been absent from Lakewood during the bowling alley incident. Coincidence? Maybe.

The sheriff begins questioning Mayor Maddox, but he insists that the tape is not what it looks like. Sheriff Hudson allows the mayor to explain himself. After insisting that his wife is in rehab, like he had been saying, Mayor Maddox asks the sheriff if he could have Brooke call her. You know, to prove she’s alive and all that jazz.

Seems as though Sheriff Hudson also has a long list of suspects. He approaches Maggie about Emma’s dad, Kevin. He tells her that he looked up his whereabouts. Apparently, he’d been away from his job at an oil rig for three weeks- right around the time that Maggie was sent a pig’s heart.

Emma sees  no end of people trying to cheer her up at school- from Noah and Audrey, to Kieran, to Piper. While Noah and Audrey insist that she can talk to them, she says, “I just keep replaying what happened.” She means that quite literally. Because of Emma’s shock and lack of sleep, she keeps having hallucinations of Will’s gory body split in two. While at school, she envisions him squeezing a heart to have the blood splatter everywhere. As she runs away, she runs in to Kieran (IRL). He wants to be there for here, but she tells him to go away because the killer is out there, which means he could be a victim at any minute.

While at working at the coffee shop, Emma has a crazy breakdown, and is sent to the hospital. She gets a surprise visit from her none other than her dad. Emma confronts him about his absence. He says he never responds to her letters because with the way things were left between him and Maggie, he felt a clean break would be best. Emma calls out his selfish reasoning. Kevin admits it has taken him a while to sort things out, but that he’s there now. Emma’s not having it though, and tells him he should leave.

Emma begins to regret her actions after Piper goes to see her. Piper earns Emma’s trust by telling her that she’s there as a friend, not for a story (DOUBT IT). Piper offers Emma some good advice about reconnecting with her father: “Second chances are rare, don’t waste them.” Maybe the killer wants Kevin to be around, well, to kill him. Why does Piper want him around so bad? Hm…

Meanwhile, Brooke finally talks to her mom, although her suspicions about her father aren’t completely gone. Just because it wasn’t her mom in the bag… Mayor Maddox reveals that after seeing one her mom’s friends OD, he panicked. Brooke still has a hard time trusting her dad, and leaves him, maybe for good.

If Emma’s dad visiting was good for anything, it was for the flashback it caused: Emma sees her parents the night her dad left, fighting about something she can’t quite figure out. In the fight, Kevin yells about wanting Emma to know the truth, about not wanting to keep a baby. Maggie insists that it was her choice.  Emma runs after her father at the hospital and insists that they weren’t talking about not wanting her, and that there were signs everywhere about it. Emma wakes up in pediatrics, her dad nowhere to be seen. (Which begs the question, was the first time she saw her dad real or not real?)

Noah and Audrey decide to investigate Mr. Branson further, by searching his classroom. They find a knife in the air conditioner unit. They call the sheriff (SMART! FOR ONCE!) after finding out that Mr. Branson is actually Mr. Palmer, a guy who was involved with an 18 year old, that is until she turned up dead. Palmer was a suspect until he disappeared, and became Mr. Branson. The sheriff asks why they were looking into Branson in the first place. Noah freaks about asks, “You think we planted this?” (Chill, a little Noah, you might look suspicious yourself). Noah spills about the malware, how it disappeared, and how he happened to be out of town during all the murders. After finding a cell phone with texts from Riley right before she died, Sheriff Hudson calls for an APB on the creep.

Emma asks Audrey to send her the video from the abandoned hospital. While searching it, she sees an ultrasound with the name “Anderson” written on it. Emma immediately questions her mom about it, and she finally begins telling some REAL truth: When she was 16, Maggie found out that Kevin had cheated on her with her best friend. Maggie went to her friend Brandon for comfort, but ended up sleeping with him. She got pregnant, and moved away for a while to give the baby up with adoption. When she moved back to Lakewood, she reconnected with Kevin.

Emma questions, “What if the child that you gave up, is back?”

Brooke turns to Mr. Branson to release some steam, so to speak. The two are just about to hook up, (DO YOU WANT TO DIE BROOKE?), when Branson says he hears something. As soon as creepy teacher leaves, someone begins messing with Brooke. Obviously, it’s the killer. Brooke begins running for her life, and manages to only get a cut. Poor Mr. Branson shows up right as the cops do. They find him holding a half naked teenager with a pretty bad wound. Dun dun dun.

TOP SUSPECT: From the beginning I had a feeling it was someone related to Brandon. Obviously, suspect number one became Emma’s half sibling, the baby Maggie had with Brandon and gave up for adoption. You know who interestingly had a father who was killed with no explanation? Piper. Could it be? While Mr. Branson certainly seems suspect, I find it a little more suspicious that Noah is pushing so hard for him to be the killer…
NEXT TO DIE: Well, it was almost Brooke this week. Going to stick with that guess for now.

WARNING: SPOILER ALERT

After posting a video of classmate Audrey (Bex Taylor-Klaus) making out with another girl, head of the mean girls, Nina (Bella Thorne), finds herself not home alone, like she thought. Dismissing some creepy texts to be her boyfriend, Tyler (Anthony Rogers), in typical slasher film form, Nina decides to take a dip in her jacuzzi. She calls for him to join her, and he does… dead. As Nina realizes there’s a third intruder in her home, she tries to run away and directs the phone’s voice command to “Call 911″ –which the phone understands as “Call Pottery Barn,” ah, technology. Nina continues to run for her life, but we all know what’s coming and sure enough, her throat gets slashed.

And that’s how MTV’s television adaptation of “‘Scream” gets itself started, an homage to Drew Barrymore’s famous death scene in the original Wes Craven film. We see early on, the show isn’t shy about its origins. It wears the films’ history on its sleeve. The majority of the pilot parallels much of Craven’s 1996 film: A group of friends sit around and gossip about their friends’ murders, decide to throw a party in honor of the deceased, and make choices that leave the audience screaming at the screen as they shield their eyes.

Yet, the show does have one major difference, the 50 minutes following Maggie’s death are more teen drama than slasher-horror-flick.

First we meet Emma (Willa Fitzgerald), the good girl of the group who tries to rekindle her friendship with Audrey after Nina’s humiliating stunt. Emma’s jock boyfriend Will (Connor Weil) seems like a decent guy until she learns he hasn’t exactly been faithful. Will’s best friend, Jake (Tom Maden) somehow proves to be an even bigger jerk, making him the perfect next victim to audiences. Speaking of jerks, we’re also introduced to Brooke (Carlson Young), who charmingly plays a convincing mean girl 2.0.

As in the original film version, the main character’s parent are somehow linked to the murders. Emma’s mother, Maggie (Tracy Middendorf) is hiding a secret past. While she was in high school, victim-of-bulling turned murderer Brandon James terrorized their town of Lakewood. After receiving gifts from Brandon and learning of his love for her, she was able to lead police to him. The police ended up shooting him dead, or so was thought until now.

Just like we had Rachel in “Scream 4″ blurt out, “”A bunch of articulate teens sit around and deconstruct horror movies as Ghostface kills them one by one. It’s been done to death,” before she’s axed, we have Audrey’s best friend Noah (John Karna), the horror film buff to guide us through the self referential meta moments (Except he doesn’t die- yet). “You can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series,” he tells his classmates. Unless, we get to know the characters, like them, root for them, hate them, whatever it be so that “when they are brutally murdered, you care.” This will be the show’s biggest challenge. While the self aware dialogue was amusing throughout the show, there is little memorable about most of the characters. Despite Noah’s clever lines, Emma and her relationship with her mother, nobody has proven to be likable or even suspect. If the mean kids are next to go, will it be too obvious? Noah’s entirely correct- while a film only has to maintain our interest for an hour and a half, how will the show maintain our interest to keep coming back every week, for ten weeks?

While the pilot episode doesn’t reveal any groundbreaking twists in the slasher genre, “Scream” starts, surprisingly strong. The show is set up for success with MTV bringing in the target audience, an attractive, likable cast, but that doesn’t mean it won’t go down the wrong path.

“Slasher movies burn bright and fast,” Noah recalls to his friends. Keeping up with the meta theme of the episode, he adds, “TV needs to stretch things out.” So far, the show has succeeded in that. After the first episode, audiences are left with intrigue. Is Branden James back? Is the killer one person pulling the strings of many to keep us second guessing who the murderer is, a la “A” in “Pretty Little Liars”? After the ending montage, we’re left with a mysterious image (But I won’t spoil that tidbit for you).

The “Scream” pilot was screened at the LA Film Festival and will premiere on MTV Tuesday, June 30.

After a week of the cast posting photos from the film with the date June 9, Lionsgate has released the first look at the final film of “The Hunger Games” series.

Francis Lawrence returned to direct the final film after directing the prior 2 in the series, “Catching Fire” and “Mockinjay Part 1.” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2″ arrives in theaters Nov. 20.

April showers bring May flowers, but what many people don’t know is that May is also mental health awareness month. Even now mental health is still sometimes stigmatized or seen as something that has to be hidden. Yet, mental illness affects 1 in 5 Americans a year, making it more and more important that people are educated about it, and are aware on how to get help.

In honor of mental health awareness month Philosophy’s Hope & Grace Initiative partnered up with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to launch the nationwide StigmaFree campaign. The campaign aims to do away with the stereotypes on mental illness. The fact is mental illness does not discriminate, and it can affect anyone at any point in their lives. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among  youths 15-24 and the second for adults aged 25-34, making the StigmaFree campaign’s aims even more significant among the younger generation.

Host, Morgan Stewart, Catt Sadler, Natasha Bedingfield, EJ Johnson, Johnny Dubrel, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Rachel McCord, Ashley Keating, and Colin Egglesfield are just some of the stars joining the StigmaFree campaign. Many of them came together on May 28th for a special lunch in honor of the campaign in hopes of bringing attention and much needed support to the cause. Its important people know that mental illness is not a death a death sentence and organizations like NAMI exist solely to bring awareness and help those who need it.

For those that are familiar with the Irish band Kodaline, it may seem like they burst onto the music scene just two years ago with their popular folk album In a Perfect World, but the band formerly known as 21 Demands, have actually been together for over nine years. After all that time, they are finally playing to the larger audiences they deserve, at iconic venues like the Wiltern in Los Angeles. Hundreds of loyal fans came out on Tuesday, May 5th to see the band perform songs from their sophomore album, Coming Up For Air, for the first time.

Excitement and hopes were high for the concert as the audience made their way into the venue. Surprisingly, the crowd was comprised mostly of teenagers. Considering the band’s Coldplay-like sound, I expected a slightly older demographic. Nonetheless, the mainly female crowd’s chattering about their favorite performances from their last show, revealed the majority of them had seen the band play before, a testament to Kodaline’s loyal, and still growing, young fan base.

The band’s first experience with musical success was as 21 Demands in November 2006, when they were on the Irish talent show You’re a Star; finishing as the series’ runners-up. They released their first single, “Give Me a Minute” in March 2007, through digital7 downloads on the RTÉ website and made chart history when the single topped the Irish Singles Chart. However, the group decided to change their name after their initial success because, as Mark Prendergast said in an interview, “they didn’t really like the music they were playing.” Lead vocalist Steve Garrigan and guitarist Prendergast have known each other since childhood. The two started playing together as teens and after many band iterations, they found their final two members Vinny May and Jason Boland and settled on the name Kodaline.

On Tuesday, the band took their places on the stage, and didn’t really move for the majority of the show. Along with their movement, Kodaline’s crowd interaction was also kept to a minimum. They kept things minimalistic, which would have been okay if the audience wasn’t so boring, but the crowd never seemed to fully engage in the show and it took away from the overall ambiance. Things felt a little stiff, but what they lacked in stage presence, they made up for with their sound.

The number of songs from their first and sophomore albums were balanced equally, and the refinement in their style over the years was easy to pinpoint. They would bounce from the older folky numbers that were seemingly cut from the same indie-rock hit mold, to unique new songs that are distinctly bolder and brighter than their older material.

They started off the show with the song “Ready” off their latest album Coming Up For Air. It was a happy uptempo start to the show that worked well with the acoustics inside the Wiltern. Had the crowd been a little more interactive, it would have been the kind of song to make people get up and dance.

The song that really kicked off the gig, however, was “Unclear,” which started off delicately and burst into a faster paced, drum-thumping affair rounded out by Garrigan’s melodic howling. Teamed with the thrashing white lights illuminating the back of the stage, the song mirrored the gig with its deceivingly average start interrupted by a display of the band’s incredible talent.

Johnny McDaid joins Kodaline

The lighting actually played a very important role throughout the performance. When all six spotlights were focused on Garrigan at the center of the stage, his blonde mop was left illuminated, giving him an angelic glow. A blue wash accompanied slower, moodier songs while bright red flashing lights added to the tension of faster-paced fares. The lights gave the impression of watching the show through 3D glasses. This spectacular, pulsing visual feast alongside Garrigan’s unconventional vocals gave a powerful live-music experience despite the band staying stationary on the stage.

Their departure from the stage after an hour was received with impatience for an encore. It was probably the most enthusiastic the crowd got all night and Kodaline’s return to the stage with their newest single “Honest” seemed to finally wake up the audience. The last song of the night, “All I Want,” their biggest commercial success to date–making it onto the “Fault in Our Stars” soundtrack and an episode of Grey’s Anatomy– was a fan favorite. The song encapsulated the pleasing acoustic guitar and airy, stripped back vocal sound that Kodaline is known for. At the same time, it probably wasn’t the best selection for an encore considering the melancholy lyrics.

Kodaline’s runaway success in the two years since their rebirth only suggests that the band will continue to grow in popularity. And with their already refined stage presence, it’s exciting to see how they can progress even further over the next few years.

Earlier today, Sam Smith took to Instagram to announce he had to cancel his Australian tour due to a small small hemorrhage on his vocal cords. Sam wrote, “I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour. I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. We will be announcing re-arranged dates very shortly. This kills me.”

The cancellation includes sold out dates in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, as well as TV appearances. Sam has not yet announced whether his Asian tour, which is set to kick off May 7 in Tokyo, will be affected.

Let’s face it, in recent years we’ve come to think of Johnny Depp as the quirky actor in all those Disney/Tim Burton movies. We think of the elaborate costumes from movies like “Into the Woods” or “Alice and Wonderland.” Long forgotten is the fact that Depp is pretty damn good without all the extravagance (remember Donnie Brasco guys?), but it looks like “Black Mass” might be the movie that reminds us of his greatness.

The first trailer for the crime drama, which was released on Thursday, suggests that the actor’s at least got the look down.  Depp plays the infamous Boston gangster Whitey Bulgar in the film and the resemblance is uncanny. Depp dons a receding hairline, steely blue eyes and bushy blonde eyebrows. It seems that for the first time in a while, Depp is employing elaborate hair and makeup for realism rather than fantasy.  But the makeup isn’t the only impressive part, director Scott Cooper said Depp got everything about Bulgar right.

“Whitey Bulger’s attorney stopped by the set a couple of times and told me that Johnny not only looks like Whitey, he sounds like him and moves like him too. His charm. His cunning. Johnny captured all of that,” Cooper said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Very little is known about the next “Ghostbusters” film. Paul Feig tweeted earlier this year, “It’s official. I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call.” Other than that, and the fact that Bill Murray will not be returning, are all we know so far.
