The MTV Video Music Awards are known for not only some crazy on-stage moments, but for the outrageous fashion on the red carpet. Celebrities forgo any and all fashion rules to make statements or to simply grab some headlines. Miley Cyrus turned heads in a silver barely there number, while Nick Jonas made us sweat (not in a good way) while draped in head to toe leather. Still, some stars managed to turn heads for their impressive style.

Check out our favorite, and not so favorite, red carpet looks.

Rosemary’s Pick: Kourtney Kardashian. With all the outrageous outfits on the red carpet, it was no easy feat to stand out in a simple bright coral jumpsuit, but Kourtney managed to pull it off. Kourtney paired the outfit with gold jewels, heels and a matching clutch. The eldest of the Kardashian sisters wore her dark hair straight and sleek giving her a sexy sophisticated look. No doubt about it, Kourtney dropped jaws as she stepped out in the Balmain number. (Also, thank you for giving short girls everywhere hope for rocking a jumpsuit!)

Frances’ Pick: Nicki Minaj. Nicki is known for her crazy red carpet outfits, especially for award shows like the VMA’s, but she kept things a little more low key in a metallic gold sheer dress by Labourjoisie. Don’t get me wrong, she was showing a lot of skin, but the pearl accents and perfectly placed cutouts made the outfit look more sophisticated versus flashy. Her perfectly contoured face makeup, winged eyeliner and blunt bangs hairstyle gave her a gorgeous natural makeup look that completed the ensemble.

Leading the pack of nominees is Taylor Swift, with nine noms to her name. Taylor can credit “Bad Blood” for seven nominations (Video of the Year among those), and two for “Blank Space” (Best Female Video and Best Pop Video). Going up against Taylor for Video of the Year is her pal Ed Sheeran for “Thinking Out Loud,” which earned him another 3 nominations. His video for “Don’t” gave him another 2, for a total of 6 nominations for the Brit. Fellow British songwriter James Bay is nominated for “Artist to Watch.” But Ed Sheeran’s pals in One Direction were noticeably snubbed again this year, despite having videos for “Steal My Girl” and “Night Changes.”

While Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” received nominations for Best Female Video and Best Hip Hop Video, Nicki was snubbed in the Video of the Year category. Additionally, “Feeling Myself,” her video with Beyonce received zero love. Nicki let out her frustration in a series of tweets:

While no names were named, it seemed as though Nicki Minaj might have been referencing Taylor Swift, and perhaps would even pull a Kanye if she won?

Taylor Swift surprisingly didn’t stay quiet on the matter, but Nicki insisted it had nothing to do with Taylor personally.

Drama already and the VMA’s don’t even take place until August 30, 2015.

On Friday June 26, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide, making the United States the 21st country to legalize gay marriage. In the 5-4 ruling, married same-sex couples will now be legally allowed to marry in any state with the same rights as heterosexual couples. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.” He added, “Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” President Obama called the decision history, adding, “This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. When all Americans are truly treated as equal, we are more free.”

With the SCOTUS ruling, celebrities took to Twitter and Instagram to celebrate America’s victory. Harry Styles shared a rainbow flag on Instagram, and tweeted, “Huge day for America.. Happy to see the news. All the love.” Matt Bomer and Neil Patrick Harris, whom are both in same sex marriages, rejoiced in the step towards equality, with Harris tweeting, “It’s a new day. Thank you Supreme Court. Thank you Justice Kennedy. Your opinion is profound, in more ways than you may know. <s>#</s>huzzah.”

We’re not just talking about all the performances we’ve already forgotten about, but all the in between moments where it seemed all celebrities were throwing shade at each other. Miley Cyrus’ unenthusiastic face during Taylor Swift’s performance, as well as her refusal to clap for Ed Sheeran’s win topped our most memorable moments. Check out not only Miley, but Rita Ora making some unapologetic faces at fellow artists in our Storify below. Some people won awards in between too.

Yesterday, iHeartRadio announced it would honor the best in various genres of music with it’s first iHeartRadio Music Awards. The show will air on NBC on May 1, 2014. The iHeartRadio Music Awards will include live performances, never-before-seen collaborations, celebrity guest appearances and live award presentations. Votes will be determined by how many times fans have thumbed up favorite songs, created stations, used Shazam to discover music, and posted about favorite artists on Facebook and Twitter.

Each voting category initially features 10 nominees – listeners will then narrow down to five finalists during a four-week period, with the finalists to be announced during a one-hour special live event on March 26, 2014 at the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles.

Young girls of the current generation may not know who she is, but Kathleen Hanna literally started a movement. As the former front woman for feminist punk bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, Hanna sang about misogyny, domestic violence and finding your own voice. She helped create the Riot Grrrl movement and was an integral part of third wave feminism. Young women in the 90s saw Hanna as a heroine, but in 2003 she mysteriously left the spotlight and stopped performing.

Nearly a decade passed before we would hear from Hanna again, but this past November a documentary called “The Punk Singer” emerged onto the scene and brought Hanna back to the stage. The film, directed by Sini Anderson, follows Hanna from her beginnings in Olympia, Washington all the way through her decision to leave Le Tigre (she stopped performing because of her struggle with late-stage Lyme disease) and now her new project, The Julie Ruin.

Hollywood Times Square caught up with Hanna to chat about her diagnosis, getting back into performing, and where the feminist movement is today.

The film alludes to the fact that your illness is something of a mystery to people. Was this something that you were purposely keeping to yourself? If so, why was that?

Well I didn’t tell my wider circle of friends for a really long time. I think my core group of friends and my family new something was wrong, but they didn’t know what it was. I also didn’t know what it was so it was really hard to tell people besides my family. My current band mates in The Julie Ruin, we were writing the record and I still didn’t have a diagnosis. I was constantly going to specialists and coming in with a different diagnosis every week. Saying, hey you know someone told me I have Chron’s disease, oh someone told me I have degenerative arthritis or whatever. It wasn’t a conscious decision not to tell anybody. It’s not like, I’m not like Miley Cyrus and everybody’s not banging down my door to found out every last thing that’s going on with me, you know what I mean? I told my friends at my birthday when I had a birthday cake shaped like a tick and when I cut into it like fake blood squirted everywhere. And that’s how my friends found out, they asked why I had that cake. I told everybody I had Lyme disease and it was a really bad idea because then I spent my birthday talking about Lyme disease. Happy birthday to me!

I read an article recently that quoted Miley Cyrus as saying I’m one of the biggest feminists and I was wondering if you could just comment on that?

I just… you know when the word feminist gets brought up by somebody who everyone is watching, it means that people are going on the interest and they’retyping ‘what does feminism mean?’ And that makes me happy because I think about you know, if I was nine years old and I was a Miley Cyrus fan – I am actually a Miley Cyrus fan, of two songs, I really like Party in the USA and I like The Climb — um and my friend actually did a whole show based on Miley Cyrus. She’s a performance artist so she should really be the one being asked this question, but you know I just imagine being nine years old and loving the songs or loving Hannah Montana and being like ‘whoa what’s feminism?’ And then ending up reading something about domestic violence and being like ‘that happens in other people’s houses because that’s happening in my house. I can get help for that?’ There’s got to be at least one person that that happens for because she’s using that word so whether I like her other art or not, or whether I agree with every artistic decision she makes is beyond the point. I think the fact that she said that word and has such a large platform is only going to do good. I can’t say if she’s a feminist or not because that’s up to her.

I know that you and Sini are friends, why did you decide to have her tell this story about you now?

Ummm… three things… bullet points. One, I knew Sini for 15 years and we were part of the same scene. Two, I was really sick and didn’t think I’d ever be able to have a movie made about me again and there wasn’t a lot of video footage of me talking that existed in the world and three, one of the reasons that I didn’t want to do it [before] was that I realized I internalized sexism. That I felt like it was stepping forward and taking credit for my accomplishments and somehow I thought that was bad and I wanted to get over that hurtle, so I said yes.

In the documentary you mentioned that there was a point in your life when you were really media averse and now you’re doing interviews. What changed in you in terms of that and being able to talk to the media?

I think all of us would say we don’t trust the media to a certain extent depending on what media is, like if it’s Fox News of course I don’t trust it, but I realized things are more permeable and you know writers need to make money and a lot of them are really fucking cool. I have friends who are journalists now, so I’m kind of like ‘look it’s not this universal thing where they’re all assholes.’ And when I was really young and I didn’t know what a publicist was or a manager or any of that stuff, it was just too much for us to handle and too much for us to manage. And because we didn’t step forward with our own footage or own story or whatever, you know we were writing our own stories in our fanzines and that was enough for us. We didn’t need to be in glossy magazines. That wasn’t really the goal, the goal was to change things on the underground for the better, the underground music scene, we weren’t really that interested in the main stream. I feel like in Le Tigre I was more interested in the mainstream and also we had help and so it was so much easier to deal with the media when there was a buffer and when it’s not just too much work you know what I mean? Part of it was just that it was too much work for four totally dysfunctional fuck ups to be perfectly honest. In the movie it was like ‘oh that was just our decision’ and yeah there’s a part of like mythology around it, cause that’s what it is, but you know truth be told we were a bunch of fuck ups that didn’t know what we were doing. And now that I look back on it the fact that we got in any magazines at all is totally weird and incredible and that’s what brought a lot of people into the feminist punk rock scene, is like an article in Spin that they read. So at the time maybe I hated it but it’s like I hated Girl Power when Spice Girls stole it but then I’d rather have six year olds dancing around to that than Blurred Lines or something.

Have you seen any kind of change in the way that you’re talked about ever since you put your own voice out there?

Hmmm… that’s interesting. I don’t know I mean I try really hard not to read the press. I read stuff when it’s in the New York Times because I know my mom’s going to see it, but I try not to read too much, but maybe go to the next question because I really don’t know how I’m perceived at all. I have no idea. Is that really bad?

No not at all. If I were you I would think it’s better not to know what people are saying about me. I think you have the right idea. Back then you talked a lot about feminism and where feminism was, where do you think it is now because it’s not really something you hear people talk about as much, so how do you think it’s doing now?

I feel like with this recent spat of pop stars who are debating if they’re feminists or not or whatever – Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift – I think that there’s a national conversation about that, there’s a national conversation about Pussy Riot, which is sort of fading from view now, but still there in the distant. And then what’s going on in Texas is mobilizing a lot of women and a lot of people in general, so I think that there’s some exciting stuff happening. From what I see when I do lectures and stuff, or like I just did a q & a for the film the other night and there were five teenagers in the front row who are starting a feminist club at their school and I was just really moved by that. And I get letters all the time from other teenage girls that are like I’m starting a feminist club and I’m just like how awesome is that? It’s really great.

With all the Miley Cyrus shenanigans we’ve been seeing in the last couple of months, it’d be easy to think that feminism is no longer a priority in our culture. We’ve been bombarded by twerking, Miley’s tongue, and naked women dancing in Robin Thicke music videos, but one woman decided to remind us just how important feminism is and the great art that has come out of it. In her first feature documentary “The Punk Singer,” Sini Anderson explores the life of punk rock feminist and musician Kathleen Hanna.

Best known for fronting the bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, Hanna’s story was filled with mystery and inspiration and after almost a decade of staying out of the spotlight, Hanna entrusted Anderson to tell her story. The documentary features clips of over 20 years of archival footage and revealing interviews with stars like Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, Carrie Brownstein and Hanna herself.

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Anderson to talk about her friendship with Hanna, the feminist movement and why making “The Punk Singer” was so important.

Kathleen Hanna (Photo courtesy of Aliya Naumoff)

HTS: Why did you decide to tell her story now?

Anderson: She has a really important story and she means a lot to a lot of people. And I think that she can continue to mean a lot to a bunch of people and it’s a really important time to tell it because since she started making work, there’s been kind of a dip in feminist activism so I thought it was a good time.

HTS: Going off of that, where do you think the feminist movement is today?

Anderson: Well, I mean, I don’t know if we’re at a place where we’re identifying the next wave of feminism. I would love it if there were some young feminists out there that could get in touch with me and let me know. I’m waiting to hear from them you know? So I mean, where we are with actual feminism in this country, I’ll just concentrate on this country, we’re in big need for it. When we started the film I wasn’t seeing any feminist activity at all, at least it felt that way. People felt politically burnt out to me. So things started to die down a little bit. And during the filming of “The Punk Singer” a few things happened to activate feminist activism again. The Pussy Riot and what was going on in Toronto [etc.] … I feel that people, both young women and men started paying attention a little bit more to feminist issues. So it seems like we’re in a really good place with awareness about it. I’d love to see a lot more action.

HTS: Tell me about your background with feminism?

Anderson: I used to be a poet and I performed a lot and did a lot of slam stuff in the early 90s. I ended up moving to San Francisco and I couldn’t find other female performers there or I wasn’t seeing enough. It seemed like a really guy dominated poetry scene – because there was a poetry scene in the 90s (laughs) – You know I started performing at this bar and people were telling me “Hey you could do an all girl open mic, If you wanna do it, you can do it” So I ended up meeting Michelle Tea, I was going to ask her to read at the first Sister Spit and she ended up being my partner in that and that was the beginning of Sister Spit. And it kind of took off really quickly and we did a lot really fast because there was a big need for it. There was just such a big need so we created this scene pretty quickly. We followed all our friends that were in rock bands that were beginning to tour and we wanted to tour too and tell our story. So we did that, picking up different writers all over the country over about a two-year period.

HTS: Why didn’t you decide to make the Sister Spit documentary your first feature?

Anderson: You know that feature about Kathleen… I feel like it was really timely, it felt like it was a really important time to do it. Also I had the full cooperation of Kathleen to do it. She was like “I think I should tell my story, but you have to be the one that tells it. I’m not going to tell it to anybody else.” So as a filmmaker, it’s seldom that you have an opportunity like that. It would be ridiculous for me to say ‘ok well let me make this other one first and then come back to you.’ It’s just kind of the way that it happened. It just felt like the right time. And I do think the Sister Spit documentary will get made, so I’m not as worried about the timing of that.

HTS: The two of you seem to know each other pretty well since she asked you to tell her story. How did you and Kathleen meet and get to know each other?

Anderson: We have a lot of mutual friends and we met through a mutual friend, and feminist artist, Tammy Rae Carland.

HTS: You’ve said that there was so much about her and about her story that you couldn’t put it all in the film. What are some things you think might have been missed in the documentary?

Anderson: Well, one of the more heartbreaking things that had to be kept out was her incredible sense of humor. Like, I wanted to just be able to put in like fifteen minutes of her just being ridiculously funny in there because she’s super funny. So yeah, I would say humor. Also, there were a lot of quieter moments where Kathleen was more contemplative and we sat with her there as she came to her answers on different topics and questions. And they included really beautiful moving topics and shots and in the end they just weren’t moving quick enough. So there’s definitely something much more beautiful and hilarious in a longer format out there, but we’re really happy with the way it turned out. I feel like we hit what we needed to hit. A lot of the stuff that got left out was about friendship and I felt like that was really inspiring. It’s really necessary for female artists to have other artists to look up to and not feel like we’re judging each other or putting each other down but supporting each other. So Kathleen’s had some really strong female friendships in her life. That felt critical as well … that kind of support… but it may have been one too many topics getting introduced you know?

HTS: At the end of the film you really got into Kathleen’s health and her struggle with Lyme disease, how is she doing now?

Anderson: You know the last I heard, I haven’t really talked to her in a little while because she’s been on the road a lot and so have I, the last I heard she was doing pretty good and I just hope that continues. She’s still doing some treatments. Lyme disease is something that goes in remission, but you can potentially have for the rest of your life, it’s kind of autoimmune right, so you really just have to take care of yourself and she’s doing pretty good. After we finished filming the documentary she got much much sicker so we’re really happy that she’s doing as well as she is now, like well enough to tour and sing.

HTS: When you started working on the documentary did you already know about her health issues and how serious it was?

Anderson: We did know that she had health issues because she’d been really sick for six years but they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. It was another part of the timing of the documentary, because we really didn’t know what was wrong with her and she was getting worse and worse so that felt time sensitive as well. It was probably six months into filming the documentary that she got properly diagnosed. So that diagnosis did impact us while we were filming.

HTS: I also saw that you were working on making a narrative film. Tell me a little bit about how that’s going to work and transitioning to that type of film.

Anderson: Yeah, I’m pretty excited about it, I can’t talk that much about it right now except that I have a couple of writing partners that I’m working with and it’ll be a narrative story that’s inspired by a documentary. It’s an important documentary to me, a very important documentary and I think it’s going to be in development for the next year. I’m also involved in production on another documentary about late stage lyme disease.

HTS: Now I know you said you couldn’t really talk too much about the narrative film, but can you tell me a little bit about that documentary and how it affected you?

Anderson: Yeah I think it would be a dead giveaway. It had some life changing stuff, but I would say queer culture and class is probably the most I can say about it. It’s such a weird thing right, I’m sorry I can’t talk about it more. We’re REALLY excited about it though.

HTS: Tell me a little bit more about you, we’ve been talking a lot about feminism, but how did you become interested in filmmaking?

Anderson: You know I’m just basically interested in people’s stories and I feel like one of the things I have in common with Kathleen is, I think my work has always been about trying to express that deeper level of feeling that maybe most people aren’t comfortable expressing, in order to A. not feel alone B. hopefully other people won’t feel alone. But stories in general, and communication, have always been at the forefront of what I wanted to do. I feel like whatever the format, whether it’s a poem, a story, working on somebody else’s film helping them finish a film, is it collaborating with studio artists, like I’ve done a lot of different type of work and I think that settling into film right now – cause that’s really all I want to do right now – makes a lot of sense because I always can kind of pull these different elements together. But yeah, and it’s a big step right, to say I’m going to quit my job and do documentary filmmaking and I’m going to keep going to try to make another film.

HTS: How did you go about getting the funding for the film and having the guts to just go with it and make it all happen?

Anderson: We had very little funding. We had an amazing Kickstarter campaign that happened after we finished the first production, but before the production itself, I knew that if I waited around to try to raise the money to make the film that the film wouldn’t get made or it wouldn’t get made for a couple of years and I wanted to make it right then. So I’m really lucky that I had directors of photography that were willing to work completely for free and an associate producer and people that were helping us make things happen. It was totally pop up style, you know, really pulling your resources together and there were just a lot of people helping us along the way. We didn’t raise capitol to make the movie. And it’s important to say that the first production was another thing. Once we finished making the film, we got to take a deep breath and say okay well now how are we going to edit it and that’s when Kicksarter came in and searching for other producers.

I’ve enjoyed One Direction since “What Makes You Beautiful,” but only because I understood one hundred percent what they are — a boy band.

The guys were literally thrown together by Simon Cowell and made into superstars. I understand the “1D can do no wrong” mentality their fans have towards their manufactured music because I lived it with Backstreet Boys and Aaron Carter (yeah, I thought “How I Beat Shaq” deserved a Grammy). While I generally listen to more “indie” music, I’ve always appreciated One Direction for their contributions to my “Getting Ready” playlist, or my drunken loud sing-a-longs. All that being said, the guys surprised me with their latest album “Midnight Memories.”

While the band’s past two albums have been more on the pure pop side, “Midnight Memories” has a very obvious rock (mostly 80s) edge to it. “Best Song Ever,” which most obviously bridges the gap between “Take Me Home” and the latest LP, is the pure pop song we’d expect from the quintet. But don’t think people didn’t notice that nod to The Who’s “Baba O’riley” in the opening. The album’s title track “Midnight Memories” seems very influenced by Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me.” From the deluxe version of the album, “Does He Know?” is clearly an ode to Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl.” “Little Black Dress” also addresses 80s rock, with a messy and sexy song that sings, “I wanna see the way you move for me baby,” which will surely have 90,000 girls screaming every night on their just announced 2014 “Where We Are” stadium tour.

The band began when the boys were just 16, 17, 18, so now, three years later, it would be pretty sad if their albums didn’t continue to show some growth. Since the guys are still young, (Harry, the youngest at 19) the songs have become very sexually charged, but with some amount of subtlety in their “rock ‘n roll” lyrics. After all, One Direction still has young fans, ones which they don’t want to quickly lose like Miley Cyrus did. The chorus to “Midnight Memories,” sings, “Midnight memories oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.. Baby you and me, stumbling in the street singing, singing, singing, singing. Midnight memories, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Anywhere we go never say no. Just do it, do it, do it.” The “Little White Lies” chorus says, “You say you’re a good girl, but I know you would girl.” However, you’re not fooling anyone over 14 with those lyrics.

While the 80s rock bit might be fun for the parents dragged to the show to listen to, the songs sometimes feel forced. Instead of being rock, it sounds more like “Hey, I’m a rock (pop) star!” This is fine though, because it’s what’s to be expected from a boy band with an “edgier” album. The songs that sounded more genuine were the folky, Mumford and Sons paddle-drum-inspired tracks. The band’s second single, “Story of my Life” is a perfect example. All five of the boys helped co-write the song, which is by far one of the best songs on the album. With the acoustic aspect, the strong writing, and super developed vocals from all five of the boys, this feels like the most natural next step for the group. Following in a similar suit is the Lumineers-esque “Happily” co-written by Harry Styles. The song is very reminiscent of and just as catchy as — if not more so — than “Ho Hey.” “Through the Dark” and “Something Great” also fit in with these songs. If I were to pick the direction (ha) their next album would go, it would be in the style of these four, which by the way, all feature at least one of the members as a co-writer (as do all but three songs on the Deluxe edition).

Other songs on the album are everything you want to have in a One Direction song: a perfect balance of all five guys singing, super catchy choruses, fun up-tempo dance songs, and cute ballads that will make everyone swoon. “Diana” is very infectious, following suite with the more 80s rock influenced. “Don’t Forget Where You Belong,” written by Niall Horan and McFly, is very anthemic, clearly written with a stadium tour in mind. “Why Don’t We Go There” is one of the more “pop” songs on the album, and I have to give credit to Niall who sounds great at the end of the song (really through the entire album, his voice has matured the most). “You and I” and “Half a Heart” will surely bring some tears and aw-ing from the girls, as well as raised cell phones and glow sticks (do they still sell those?). Although, I have to remark on the awkward line in “Half a Heart”: “I’m walking around with just one shoe.” That’s not endearing, go find your other shoe.

While the band had some solid songs that begin to show signs of artistry in some of the members, others are completely unmemorable. Songs like “Strong,” “Better Than Words,” and “Right Now” were among my least favorite, mostly because they felt unnecessary. The songs added nothing to album, and honestly, it took me a few listens to even remember them. “Alive” is another one, but due to the poor songwriting. The beat and melody are catchy, but the song is saying “Yes, go sleep with every girl you see. It’s okay, ‘if it makes you feel alive'” No thanks. These songs, mixed with the more “forced” sounds, and the “almost-there” songs, show how rushed this album was. Three albums in three years? If the lads had taken their time on this album, perhaps had the opportunity to write more songs without co-writers, the album would have felt more like an album, and less like a cluster of singles. Although rumors of a 2014 album have already started, I hope they take their time on the next one.

But hey, most of these songs are catchy beyond belief, and I may or may not be buying tickets to their 2014 stadium tour…so, I think they’re doing something right.

Score: 3.5/5

While we normally like to see Miley Cyrus more covered up, we loved her costume of Lil’ Kim. Frankly, wish I had the guts to wear it. But Miley herself became a costume for Paris Hilton. Check out our gallery below to see some of our favorite costumes from this year including Miley and Paris, as well as Jennifer Morrison, Lauren Conrad, Chris Colfer, Sarah Hyland, and more.
