Nothing brings people together quite like great food, which is why after a successful launch last year the Los Angeles Times Food Bowl is back for its second year with even more to look forward to.

This year’s Los Angeles Food Bowl once again kicks off on May 1st for a full magnificent 31 days celebrating LA’s always evolving food and drink scene. While shining a light on LA’s food scene the festival will simultaneously work to raise awareness and funds to fight against food waste, hunger, and promote sustainability and waste reduction with the help of festival charity partners and its events. For the month of May the Food Bowl will have LA buzzing with over 250 events that will include the chefs and restaurants responsible for making Los Angeles a food destination. From dining events, panel discussions, chef collaborations, volunteer projects, night markets, and cocktails this upcoming 31 days of food has something for everyone.

The official launch party will be taking place at Rossoblu this year and will feature an all star lineup of the best LA chefs creating “Things in a bowl.” The launch party will also be announcing the Restaurant of the Year and the winner of the Gold Award. Last year’s Restaurant of the Year award went to Locol (Roy Choi and Daniel Patterson) and the Gold Award was presented to Wolfgang Puck. For the first time ever the launch will also be open to public to share in the festivities.

With May only being months away the anticipation and excitement for the Food Bowl continues to grow. It is set to be a month full of excitement and endless delicious moments so mark your calendars for March 31st when the full list of events are released so you can start planning your May food event schedules.

DineL.A.’s Restaurant Week is underway and if you’re anything like us the foodie inside of you is overwhelmed with excitement!

With over 300 restaurants participating in the event by offering prix fixe lunch & dinner menus, it’s the perfect opportunity to treat yourself and finally try that restaurant you’ve been eyeing for months. Participating restaurants stretch the from Santa Monica to Pasadena and everywhere in between, so the options can seem overwhelming, but the menus posted on the dineL.A. website make it easier to narrow down your selections. While the $15-$20 lunch menus and $29-$49 dinner menus might entice you to head right to the biggest names in town, Restaurant Week is also a great way to explore your neighborhood a bit more and try a meal that would have been much more of a splurge any other week of the year.

For our Restaurant Week pick we chose the dinner menu at Osteria Mamma in Hollywood, and we were not disappointed. The Sgamberata salad with tiger shrimp and arugula, Linguine alla Carbonara, and the Tiramisu were the stand-out favorites from the night. The mustard dressing on the Sgamberata was the perfect compliment to the peppery arugula, and the Carbonara sauce on the linguine wonderfully rich without being overwhelming. Paired with the included glass of wine and finished off with Tiramisu, the menu is an excellent sample of the delicious fare Osteria Mamma has to offer.

All of the selections on the Restaurant Week menu are available at Osteria Mamma year-round, so don’t miss out on the chance to try them while the deal lasts!

“Songs My Brothers Taught Me,” the debut feature by Chloe Zhao, explores the complicated and emotionally fraught relationship between a community and their home. The film screened at AFI FEST on November 10th.

The film, shot and largely cast on location, follows two siblings living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in the months immediately following their estranged father’s death — a famous rodeo cowboy who before his untimely death, had very minimal involvement in their lives. He spent much of his time drinking and impregnating other women, he had fathered 25 kids by nine or so “so-called wives.”

As the film begins the siblings learn their father’s just died a predictable drunkard’s death in an accidental fire. The story develops as a slice-of-life where we slowly get a picture of life on the reservation through Johnny (John Reddy) & Jashaun’s (Jashaun St. John) experiences.

The two rely on each other for support, having grown up without their father and a mother that is generally absent from view, Johnny takes over the role of caretaker. He sells bootlegged alcohol to make money. The cinematography reflects the emptiness felt throughout the reservation, with frequent shots of wide-open landscape. The cloud looming over the horizon is Johnny’s plans for his future—he wants to move to Los Angeles with his girlfriend Aurelia (Taysha Fuller) once they graduate to follow his dream of being a boxer while she attends college.

Though obviously torn over the decision to leave the reservation and his family, Johnny is aware that the options open to him if he stays on the reservation are limited. In the face of that future, Johnny begins bootlegging on a larger scale to save the money necessary for his move though it puts him in dangerous situations and on the radar of rival bootleggers. It also takes much of his time away from Jashaun.

With Johnny more and more absent, Jashaun begins spending time with a new friend, Travis (Travis Lone Hill), who’s been newly released from prison. In exchange for the promise that he’ll make her a pow-wow dress, Jashaun helps him with his small business selling clothing hand-painted with his designs.

After Johnny and Jashaun find out about their dad’s sexual escapades they start connecting with their half-siblings at various points in the film. Jashaun seeks out the half-brother who her father had lived with, and finds closure in a conversation about their father. Another half-brother seeks Johnny out and continually offers him a job in his stepfather’s garage to get him out of bootlegging. The alternative family bonds explored in the film illustrate at once the lack of parental presence yet also the strong sense of community on the reservation.

Eventually the confrontation between Johnny and the rival bootleggers comes to a head, leaving him beaten and his car torched, erasing his chances of getting to Los Angeles. In the end, Johnny doesn’t leave with Aurelia, and the film closes with him reflecting on the bonds that will leave him tied to the reservation, whether he stays or goes.

In an AFI fest Q&A, Zhao spoke about her experience as someone without a strong sense of home due to the fact that she moved around a lot as a child. She stated that she wanted to make a film that explored the ways in which a person’s home could be “freeing and trapping at the same time.” The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is a particularly poignant setting for such an exploration; the reservation is the home that has been forced upon the community, and in many ways reflects the injustices that have been thrust upon Native American communities. Characters such as Travis reflect the incarceration cycle on the reservation, and the presence of bootleg alcohol throughout the film highlights the community’s struggle with alcoholism. It would have been easy for Zhao to only paint a negative picture of the reservation, but of course “home” is always more complicated than meets the eye.

Written and Directed By: Chloe Zhao

Starring: John Reddy, Jashaun St. John

Grade: B+

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and has his eyes set on relocating to Broadway? SpongeBob Squarepants, that’s who.

We’re sorry if you thought we were referring to Gary the snail. Spongebob is having a moment, this year the show got its first feature film based on the popular kid’s television show and 2016 will be known as the year of SpongeBob’s musical debut. The Nickelodeon produced show will run as a limited engagement July 7-13 at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre with the intent of making a proper Broadway appearance during the 2016-17 season.

If the idea of one of our favorite sea animals starring in his own musical doesn’t motivate you to buy a ticket, the musical lineup might. David Bowie, John Legend, TI, Aerosmith, and Cyndi Lauper have all signed on to produce pieces for the production. It’s like having a Now That’s What I Call Music –Spongebob edition CD that includes all your favorite artists throughout the decades. The best part is that the list of artists signing onto the project keeps getting larger, the most recent additions include Panic! At the Disco, The Flaming Lips and the Plain White T’s.

The SpongeBob Musical was co-conceived by Tina Landau (from Steppenwolf Theatre Company), who will also direct.

“I was drawn to this project not only for its wild theatrical possibility, but also because I felt SpongeBob, at its core, is a layered and hilarious ensemble comedy,” Landau said to Deadline. “We’re bringing the show’s fabled characters to life through actors — not prosthetics or costumes that hide them — and we’re deploying some unconventional stage craft that will prove that anything can happen in Bikini Bottom.”

If you’re wondering what a Spongebob musical will be all about Nickelodeon said the musical is, “a rousing tale of a simple sea sponge who faces the unfathomable” that will unleash “anarchic absurdity under the sea.”

SpongeBob Squarepants is a beloved animated children’s character and his quirkiness defined a generation of young TV viewers.

Cyma Zarghami, President of Viacom Kids and Family Group said, “this character has achieved a level of global popularity that we could never have imagined, and bringing him to Broadway is a way to give him a new platform, literally, to reach audiences of all ages who are looking for an engaging, funny and innovative musical theatre experience.”

We’ve seen “The Lion King,” “Shrek,” and “Beauty and the Beast” on Broadway, will this be the next hit to have come out of our animated favorites? What other animated characters from your childhood would you want to see on Broadway?

After the leak, Warner Brothers had a change of heart and released the entire clip that was shown in Hall H on Saturday. Watch it here:

ORIGINAL STORY: July 12, 20:44

Fans in Hall H had quite the surprise in store for them on Saturday during the Warner Brothers panel. The studio brought out “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer. Although production for the film is still underway in Toronto, Ayer told the audience he wanted to stop by because “you guys run this shit! We’re making this movie for you, right here. It’s all about canon, it’s all about being faithful to the source material. You guys know who you are, and know what you want, and you’re going to get it with this show. All this good vs. evil shit is kind of played out. It’s time for bad vs. evil. It’s time for a movie about bad guys! Who’s got the best bad guys out there? DC Comics, the best villains. Now, I’m not trying to start a East Coast-West Coast feud with Marvel Comics, but someone has to say the truth.”

Ayer then proceeded to joke that he “found this on the internet,” and showed the first footage from the film, which of course, has since leaked. (You can find it easily, I promise, but we won’t post it here). The footage begins with Amanda Weller (Viola Davis), talking with a man about “the most dangerous people in the world who can do some good.” The man asks, “What makes you think you can control them?” She assures him, “Because getting people to act against their own self-interests is what I do for a living.” We then see a montage of Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Enchantress (Cara Delevingne), and the rest of the suicide squad in action. “We’re some kind of suicide squad” we heard Deadshot say in a voice over. The best part comes towards the end with the Joker (Jared Leto) creepily saying, “I’m not going to kill you, I’m just going to hurt you, really, really bad.”

Ayer then invited the cast on stage, minus Jared Leto: Karen Fukuhara (Katana), Adam Beach (Slipknot), Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and Will Smith. Before leaving, Smith told the crowd “We are banging out something that is absolutely fantastic. We’ll see y’all next year!” The film is slated for an August 5, 2016 release.

On Thursday, the cast of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2″ participated in their very last Comic Con panel in San Diego, CA. Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Willow Shields, producer Nina Jacobsen and director Francis Lawrence were joined on stage by moderator Conan O’brien (you may have heard of him) to discuss the past films and what fans can look forward to in the finale.

The panel opened with a full drumline dressed in all white. Fans were then treated with a short teaser for the film, a “message from District 13.”

Jennifer and Josh proved their on screen chemistry is one hundred percent real. When asked about where Peeta is in part 2, he said, “It’s a long road to recovery and it has some bumps along the way. We pick Peeta up inside 13 trying to get himself back. He went through a lot back in the Capitol. They’re trying to rehabilitate him to be a good guy and help the cause.”

The gem that is Jennifer countered with “And he couldn’t stay away for long. He couldn’t resist this.”

As for Gale, Liam admits that although he’s been on the sidelines in the past films, he “becomes a big part as to how to attack the Capitol.”
The heartthrob said if he met Gale in real life he would tell him, “It’s alright mate, plenty of fish in the sea.” A possible option? Peeta, apparently.

After Josh admitted to looking forward to a scene that Peeta and Gale have, Jennifer was shocked she didn’t know about it. “There might be a kiss between Josh and I,” Hemsworth said. Josh quickly responded, “They said no spoilers, man!” DON’T TEASE US LIAM!

Francis told the crowd, “War is under way…this is where Katniss gets back in the action.” This was all revealed in the first trailer, which won’t make its way online for a while. (Sad face, I know). The trailer included some looks to the past, some Katniss and Peeta action, some big and deadly explosions at the Capitol, and President Snow saying, “The game is coming to its end.” At one point Peeta tells Katniss to make all the death mean something, which can point to one huge plot point (which I won’t reveal, but readers of the book YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT).

“Anyone who loves the end of the book will love the end of the movie,” Francis revealed, which again, tells anyone who read the books a lot. All I’m saying is YES, #TEAMPEETA. (Sorry for the spoiler, kinda).

Jennifer got a bit sentimental when talking about saying goodbye to Katniss, “I’ll never really say goodbye to her. I feel like it’ll always be a part of me.” She also clumsily gave Katniss credit, saying she hopes Katniss’ character rubbed off on her: “She’s brave and I’m an actress… What I have in my head is actually pretty interesting and there’s no way I’m going to be able to get it out. Something was kind of bestowed on Katniss in a way the same as saying yes to these movies was on to me. I’d like to hope that some of the leadership —you guys, I haven’t done interviews in like a year.”

The cast also tried to do the Mockingjay whisle… and failed. Liam belted out the X Files tune instead.

On Friday June 26, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide, making the United States the 21st country to legalize gay marriage. In the 5-4 ruling, married same-sex couples will now be legally allowed to marry in any state with the same rights as heterosexual couples. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than they once were.” He added, “Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.” President Obama called the decision history, adding, “This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts. When all Americans are truly treated as equal, we are more free.”

With the SCOTUS ruling, celebrities took to Twitter and Instagram to celebrate America’s victory. Harry Styles shared a rainbow flag on Instagram, and tweeted, “Huge day for America..

A record setting 67,000 people attended the Natural Products Expo West this weekend. The Anaheim convention center could barely house the 3,000 exhibitors and getting through the whole expo was pretty much impossible (even if you arrived when doors opened and stayed all day).

If you’ve never been to Expo West, it is basically a giant arena for companies — specializing in organic products, non-GMO foods, gluten free foods, vegan foods, paleo foods and any possible sub-genre of these foods — to present their products to distributors, the press, and general consumers. It’s basically a foodie’s wet dream, especially if you are a foodie with food restrictions (like me — I’m gluten free and vegetarian). But the show isn’t only about food, they also had beauty products, pet products and endless rows of supplements.

This year’s show featured nearly 700 new attendees according to event host New Hope Natural Media. The group summarized the weekend’s events in a March 10th press release.

“The move toward natural, organic and healthy products is not a fad, but a societal shift that is poised to grow to $226 billion by 2018 with an annual growth rate of 8.6 percent. New Hope Natural Media, a division of Penton, today announced Natural Products Expo West concluded a record-breaking event March 6-9 at the Anaheim Convention Center in CA. The event grew five percent bringing together over 67,000 industry members, more than 2,600 exhibiting companies and the most first-time exhibitors in the event’s history. From food and beverage to supplements and beauty to household and pet products, the event provided a window into the many categories driving the growth of the global natural products industry.”

I was among the new attendees, this year happened to be my first time at Expo West, and let me just say — I went nuts. I will give you guys full disclosure and let you know I did not attend as a member of the press. I worked for Nature’s Bakery as a brand ambassador. Basically that means since I was an exhibitor and not a journalist, I spent most of the weekend passing out Nature’s Bakery fig bars to people outside of the convention. My goodie snatching time was relegated to breaks and after work, but that did not stop me from walking out with four bags full of amazing products. Luckily my shifts ended before the actual convention closed so I got a decent amount of time to explore. Unfortunately it was nowhere near enough to see the entire show, but others really did walk out with enough product to survive a zombie apocalypse. I saw cars piled to the top with recyclable bags full of stuff.

Since I didn’t get a chance to see everything I can only tell you about the products I tried myself. I’m sure there were plenty of great (and on occasion really bad) products that I missed, but if I didn’t see it, then it doesn’t get a mention. Sorry.

Here are some items I liked (in no particular order):

1. Boom Chick-A-Pop: It seemed like people were handing out bags of popcorn left and right, but this brand really stood out. If not because of the popcorn itself then it was because of the girls driving around on mopeds handing the bags out. They literally had girls dressed in bright pastel uniforms doing drive-bys with popcorn. The kettle corn was my favorite, it’s the perfect mixture of sweet and salty. I came home with four different brands of kettle corn and this one was the best by far.

2. Vegetarian Plus Meals: This company specializes in frozen meat substitutes. They were sampling everything from vegan tuna to vegan lamb vindaloo. The tuna salad was the standout for me. It was the first time I’d tried vegan fish that didn’t have a weird rubbery texture. But really all of their “meats” were really tasty. The only downside is, almost all their products contain wheat so it won’t work for people with Celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. I didn’t know about the wheat until after I’d tried four different samples. Needless to say, things did not end well for me.

3. Silver Hills Gluten Free Bread: I’m very picky about packaged gluten free bread. Most of the time they all taste like really thick cardboard, but the Silver Hills bread actually tasted like regular bread. The samples they had out were topped with coconut oil, which turned the bread into a nice light dessert. I fell deeper in love with this bread when I saw that it is certified organic, non GMO, vegan, and only 80 calories per slice.

4. Shasha Co. Lemon Snap Cookies: Cookies with prebiotics and probiotics? Nothing like eating cookies to help your digestion. The company also has two wheat free flavors made with spelt flour. I fell in love with the lemon snaps.

5. Vega Protein Bars and Powders: Vega is plant based and all their products are vegan. They are not non-GMO verified yet, but the labels do say they use non-GMO materials. I like them because the powders are gluten free and taste much better than most protein powders. The Vega One line also incorporates other essential vitamins to help maintain a balanced diet. For example, the Vega One smoothies have two servings of vegetables in each serving.

6. Black Bear Energy: This company uses B12 instead of relying on caffeine to give customers an energy boost. The concentrated B12 spray got me going in 20 minutes. I felt energized, but not jittery like when I have too much coffee. The creators of this line boast that they use the best forms of B12 (hydroxycobalamin & adenosylcobalamin). Apparently most B12 supplements use Cyano-B12, which contains trace amounts of cyanide. I can’t really verify how true their claims are, but I do know the spray and drink taste a lot better than the typical B12 supplement (have you ever tried the pills? They taste like vomit).

Hollywood celebrities and art lovers came together last night to celebrate photographer Elliott Erwitt and the US launch of “The Macallan Masters of Photography: Elliott Erwitt Edition” at Leica Gallery in Los Angeles. The fourth edition of the series (previous honorees include Annie Leibovitz, Albert Watson, and Rankin) commissioned “the world’s most influential living photographer” (says Ken Grier, Director of Malts, the Edrington Group) to capture the spirit and character of Scotland with a collection of 158 images. Of those, 58 of the images were paired with one of 58 unreleased single cask whiskies showcasing the art of whisky making and photography.

“Mons Meg, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh”

The featured photographs were all shot in black and white, capturing the all-important “decisive moment” in various places- the Highlands and Islands, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Erwitt says, “Photography is an art of observation – it’s about creating something extraordinary out of the ordinary. You choose a frame and then wait until the right time for something magical to come along and fill it.” The Scottish people and their canine best friends, as well as the beautiful landscapes, were highlighted in the photos. The most interesting of the bunch were when Erwitt’s sense of humor mixed with his eye for photography- like in the photograph titled “Mons Meg, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh” where you see someone sticking their head in a canon, with tourists surrounding taking photos.

Elliott Erwitt with our Managing Editor, Rosemary Vega

Guests made their way through the exhibition drinking 10,15, or 18 year Macallan for the occasion.

Bob Dalgarno, Whisky Maker, The Macallan says that Macallan’s “richness and depth of character…lends itself perfectly to this year’s Masters of Photography offering. Selecting 58 individual single cask malt whiskies to bring to life Elliott’s 58 favorite images of his Great Scottish Adventure was wonderfully challenging – tasting the image through the whisky and the whisky through the image on such an unprecedented scale was inspiring.”

Panic! at the Disco front man Brendon Urie (Photograph by Chris Weeks/ WireImage)

Celebrities in attendance included Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves , Amy Smart and hubby Carter Oosterhouse, Kevin McKidd, M83’s Morgan Kibby, Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie , Rich Sommer, among many others. But the most endearing part of the evening was watching 85-year old Elliott Erwitt himself mingle with guests and happily pose for photographs.

Looking for something to do this Saturday, but are low on funds, look no further than L.A.’s own La Brea Tar Pits. The tar Pits will be host to the 11the annual TARFEST.

The event is a free music and art festival for music lovers of all ages. And, for being free, TARFEST has an impeccable lineup. Indie-rock bands Saint Motel, Nightmare Air, Echosmith, Irontom and Tapioca and the Flea are all scheduled to perform. In between the music you can also check out live artist paintings done by Greg “CRAOLA” Simkins, AXIS and William Wray. For a slightly more unique art experience you can see sculptures done by artist David O. Johnson.

Of course no festival is complete without good libations and random activities to pass the time. TARFEST will include a Lagunitas Biergarten, California Wine Bar, Gourmet Food Trucks, The Poem Store, Japanese Foundation Los Angeles tent with Calligraphy, Origami and Samurai Photos, interactive arts activities with the Petersen Automotive Museum, among other vendors and activities for the whole family.

Excavating future culture on The Miracle Mile, the TARFEST festival unites the local community in celebration of the city’s blossoming music and arts scene by showcasing some of the most talented up-and-coming bands and artists. In past years, TARFEST has brought together thousands of Angelenos with performances from bands like Blondefire, The Steelwells, Helena, Everest among others.

You do not know what great artists you’ll be missing out on if you miss this event. The festival will go from 2-8pm on Saturday. Make sure you check it out.
