‘Carol’ And Netflix Earn Big Golden Globe Nominations

The Hollywood Foreign Press announced the nominations for the 73th Annual Golden Globes on Thursday morning.

Todd Haynes’ period piece “Carol” (based on the book “The Price of Salt” by Patricia Highsmith), received the most film nominations, with a total of five. The film will go up against “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Revenant,” “Room,” and “Spotlight” for Best Motion Picture Drama. “Carol” also received a nod for Best Original Score and Best Director. Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, who star in the film, will go head to head in the Best Performance By an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama category.

But that won’t be the only interesting competition during the award show. Christian Bale and Steve Carell both earned acting nominations in a musical or comedy for their work in “The Big Short.” Although Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer didn’t star in a film together, the two new best friends will face off in the Best Performance By an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy category for their work in “Joy” and “Trainwreck,” respectively. We can’t wait to hear some serious smack talk (Or most likely comedic adoration) between these ladies.

On the television front, it seems that streaming services are taking over. Netflix proved to be a force to be reckoned with at the Golden Globes back in 2013 with “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.” This year, Netflix had more nominations than any network with 8, beating HBO by one nod. But Netflix isn’t the only streaming service that appears. In the category for Best Series, Music or Comedy, Netflix’s “OITNB” will go up against Hulu’s “Casual” and Amazon’s “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” The only two nominees from a tradition network are both HBO’s, “Silicon Valley” and “Veep.” It looks as though the “Modern Family” sweep from years past is finally over.

The Golden Globes will be hosted by Ricky Gervais on January 10 on NBC. Check out the full list of nominations below.

First Trailer Released For ‘The Big Short’ Starring Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt

Summer is officially over, which means movie theaters will be full of star studded movies waiting for their Oscar nominations. “The Big Short” is one film that’s received a lot of buzz and many think it’ll be Paramount’s way into the awards.

The Adam McKay (Step Brothers, Anchorman) directed film, starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt, is based on Michael Lewis’ book, “The Big Short: Inside The Doomsday Machine.”

“The Big Short” centers around the four men who predicted the economic collapse in the 2000s- Hedge fund manager Steve Eisman (Carell), Greg Lippmann (Gosling) the Deutsche Bank trader, Scion Capital founder Michael Burry (Bale) and one of the founders of Cornwall Capital, Ben Hockett (Pitt). After their realization of the upcoming crisis, the men make some bold investments and “bet against the banks.” Marisa Tomei, Melissa Leo, and Max Greenfield also star.

Originally the film was set to release in 2016, but after seeing an almost final cut from McKay, Paramount decided to push the date forward to be apart of the award season mix. “The Big Short” will premiere on November 12 as AFI Festival’s closing night gala before it opens in limited theaters on December 11 and wide on December 23.

87th Academy Award Nominations: Snubs and Surprises

The Academy announced the nominees for this years Oscars, and as usual, didn’t exactly hit the mark. While most of the nominees were no brainers- Reese Witherspoon, “Boyhood,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Birdman”- there were still some omissions and additions that were certainly unexpected.

Laura Dern’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress for “Wild” had the audience in gasps as the announcement was made. Other than Reese Witherspoon’s work in the film, “Wild” hasn’t received much praise. Golden Globe winner Amy Adams (“Big Eyes”) and strong contender Jennifer Aniston (“Cake”) were snubbed for Best Actress nods, allowing Marion Cotillard to sneak up for her work in the French language “Two days, One Night.” Despite not even getting a Golden Globe nomination, Bradley Cooper is up for Best Actor for “American Sniper,” his third nomination in a row.

Angelina Jolie received no praise for directing “Unbroken.” But in the male dominated category (Aren’t they all?), Jolie was not the only woman left behind. Despite “Selma” receiving a Best Picture nod, Ava DuVernay was shut out of the Best Director category. The film also received a nomination for John Legend and Common’s original song, “Glory,” but nothing else. David Oyelowo, who received high praise for his performance as Martin Luther King Jr in the film, was let out of the Best Actor nominees. Philip Lord’s “The Lego Movie” was one of the most successful animated films last year, was met with rave reviews, and received a Golden Globe nomination, but was noticeably absent from the Best Animated Feature list. At least Lord had a great response:

Even though there were disappointments, nine actors received their very first Oscar nominations! Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, Michael Keaton, Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, Emma Stone, J.K. Simmons, and Patricia Arquette are all first timers, meanwhile, Meryl Streep received her 19th nomination. Emma Stone’s reaction to the news was by far, the best ever. In a statement, Emma said, “Thank you to the Academy for this incredible honor. I am very proud and lucky to be a part of Birdman and can’t believe it came to this. I am so f–king excited. Are you allowed to say f–k when you’re making a statement for the Oscars? I’m just really f–king excited.”

“The Midnight Swim” Takes Home Breakthrough Audience Award at AFI Fest

The past week, Hollywood Blvd. has been crowded beyond normal. Replacing the tourists were filmmakers, critics, and eager movie goers, all catching various films at AFI Fest. The American Film Institute’s annual festival highlights master and emerging filmmakers from all over the world. As well as showing the 120 films selected for competition, AFI had special screenings, galas and tributes. This year, Oscar buzz worthy films “Foxcatcher,” (Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, directed by Bennett Miller) and “Still Alice” (Julianne Moore, directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland) were among the many non-competition films treated to audience.

While jury and audience awards are not new to film festivals, the audience award from AFI is slightly different from other fests. AFI offers free tickets to the public, allowing any movie lover the chance to watching rate the films. This year, “The Midnight Swim,” was honored with the Breakthrough Audience Award. The film, written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith, blurs the line between ghost story and family drama. After their mother goes missing in Spirit Lake, three sisters come together to settle her affair. On their first night, the sisters, played by Lindsay Burdge, Jennifer Lafleur and Aleksa Palladino, try to conjure a spirit, leading their relationship to unravel as they are led deep into the mystery of the lake.

“Red Army,” “Gueros,” and “10,000 KM” also took home audience awards.

TRAILER: Ron Burgundy is back in ‘Anchorman 2′

Ron Burgundy is back, this time to take on New York City’s Global News Network. Burgundy and co. are back for more shenanigans, including smoking crack on live television and competing with Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) for ratings. “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues”, due out December 20, welcomes back Steve Carell as Brick Tamland, Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana, David Koechner as Champ Kind and Vince Vaughn as Wes Mantooth. The film also features appearances by Harrison Ford, Jim Carrey, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kristen Wiig, Liam Neeson, Nicole Kidman, Tiny Fey and Amy Poehler.
