“Ender’s Game,” based on the novel by the same name by Orson Scott Card and staring Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield, led the box office this weekend, bringing in $28 million in it’s first weekend. “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa,” held over strong from last week’s debut, and brought in $20.5 million, and a total of $62.1 million thus far. The star studded “Last Vegas” (with Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline) came in third with $16.5 million. The first animated film from Reel FX, “Free Birds” opened in fourth with an estimated $16.2 million.

Also worth mentioning, Matthew McConaughey‘s latest film, “Dallas Buyers Club” opened in 9 theaters, with a solid $264,000 (number 20). With a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as awards buzz, Focus will most likely expand wide throughout the month to continue to garner strong word of mouth.

Hollywood celebrities and art lovers came together last night to celebrate photographer Elliott Erwitt and the US launch of “The Macallan Masters of Photography: Elliott Erwitt Edition” at Leica Gallery in Los Angeles. The fourth edition of the series (previous honorees include Annie Leibovitz, Albert Watson, and Rankin) commissioned “the world’s most influential living photographer” (says Ken Grier, Director of Malts, the Edrington Group) to capture the spirit and character of Scotland with a collection of 158 images. Of those, 58 of the images were paired with one of 58 unreleased single cask whiskies showcasing the art of whisky making and photography.

“Mons Meg, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh”

The featured photographs were all shot in black and white, capturing the all-important “decisive moment” in various places- the Highlands and Islands, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. Erwitt says, “Photography is an art of observation – it’s about creating something extraordinary out of the ordinary. You choose a frame and then wait until the right time for something magical to come along and fill it.” The Scottish people and their canine best friends, as well as the beautiful landscapes, were highlighted in the photos. The most interesting of the bunch were when Erwitt’s sense of humor mixed with his eye for photography- like in the photograph titled “Mons Meg, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh” where you see someone sticking their head in a canon, with tourists surrounding taking photos.

Elliott Erwitt with our Managing Editor, Rosemary Vega

Guests made their way through the exhibition drinking 10,15, or 18 year Macallan for the occasion.

Bob Dalgarno, Whisky Maker, The Macallan says that Macallan’s “richness and depth of character…lends itself perfectly to this year’s Masters of Photography offering. Selecting 58 individual single cask malt whiskies to bring to life Elliott’s 58 favorite images of his Great Scottish Adventure was wonderfully challenging – tasting the image through the whisky and the whisky through the image on such an unprecedented scale was inspiring.”

Panic! at the Disco front man Brendon Urie (Photograph by Chris Weeks/ WireImage)

Celebrities in attendance included Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves , Amy Smart and hubby Carter Oosterhouse, Kevin McKidd, M83’s Morgan Kibby, Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie , Rich Sommer, among many others. But the most endearing part of the evening was watching 85-year old Elliott Erwitt himself mingle with guests and happily pose for photographs.

HBO released the first trailer for it’s new original show, “True Detective,” tonight before the season premiere of “Boardwalk Empire.” The show, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, centers around detectives Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Harrelson), and their 17 year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. Written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga, the show takes a split narrative, jumping from 1995 when the murder took place, and to 2012 when the case is reopened. If the series is picked up for a second season, the story and characters will change, in the same format as “American Horror Story.”

“True Detective” airs in January 2014. Check out the trailer below.
