“Life Unexpected” Premiere Has Unexpected Twists

“Life Unexpected” came back for its second season on Tuesday, with new characters and more plot twists.

The CW’s newest family drama gained a decent following earlier this year and the network is doing everything it can to make sure viewers stay interested.

Last season ended with Cate (Shiri Appleby and Ryan (Kerr Smith) getting married and Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) busting in on the ceremony with hopes of breaking it up. Baze didn’t make in time to stop the vows and Cat, Lux (Brittany Robertson), and Ryan are now one big happy family. At least they seemed happy–for about five minutes.

The season premiere, titled “Ocean Uncharted,” starts off with Cate, Ryan and Lux returning from their honeymoon. Lux is avoiding Baze because she doesn’t want to admit that she told Cate to marry Ryan. And unfortunately for Baze, he’s still in love with Cate. To make matters worse, a new co-anchor is forced upon Cate and Ryan. She is an uptight, humorless author hired to give Cate and Ryan marriage advice on the air. The new anchor is also a born again virgin who claims to be saving herself for marriage, “like Jessica Simpson…and Jesus.”

Viewers were also introduced to a shady figure named Julia. She is someone from Ryan’s past and something she did almost prevented the wedding from happening (dun dun dun…). We have yet to see her face or hear her voice, but viewers can only assume she was written in to cause to trouble.

It is good to see that there will be new faces this season. Last season’s biggest flaw was the repetitiveness; nearly every episode revolved around the tension between Cate, Baze, and Ryan. My assumption is that the new characters will put the focus on something else this season.

So far, I’m interested in the new storylines that emerged tonight. I’m especially glad to see that Ryan is being given more layers; maybe he’s not perfect after all. The writers were able to provide us with a great premiere by finding ways to affect each and every one of the characters in ways that are fresh and interesting.
