On Thursday, the cast of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2″ participated in their very last Comic Con panel in San Diego, CA. Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Willow Shields, producer Nina Jacobsen and director Francis Lawrence were joined on stage by moderator Conan O’brien (you may have heard of him) to discuss the past films and what fans can look forward to in the finale.

The panel opened with a full drumline dressed in all white. Fans were then treated with a short teaser for the film, a “message from District 13.”

Jennifer and Josh proved their on screen chemistry is one hundred percent real. When asked about where Peeta is in part 2, he said, “It’s a long road to recovery and it has some bumps along the way. We pick Peeta up inside 13 trying to get himself back. He went through a lot back in the Capitol. They’re trying to rehabilitate him to be a good guy and help the cause.”

The gem that is Jennifer countered with “And he couldn’t stay away for long. He couldn’t resist this.”

As for Gale, Liam admits that although he’s been on the sidelines in the past films, he “becomes a big part as to how to attack the Capitol.”
The heartthrob said if he met Gale in real life he would tell him, “It’s alright mate, plenty of fish in the sea.” A possible option? Peeta, apparently.

After Josh admitted to looking forward to a scene that Peeta and Gale have, Jennifer was shocked she didn’t know about it. “There might be a kiss between Josh and I,” Hemsworth said. Josh quickly responded, “They said no spoilers, man!” DON’T TEASE US LIAM!

Francis told the crowd, “War is under way…this is where Katniss gets back in the action.” This was all revealed in the first trailer, which won’t make its way online for a while. (Sad face, I know). The trailer included some looks to the past, some Katniss and Peeta action, some big and deadly explosions at the Capitol, and President Snow saying, “The game is coming to its end.” At one point Peeta tells Katniss to make all the death mean something, which can point to one huge plot point (which I won’t reveal, but readers of the book YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT).

“Anyone who loves the end of the book will love the end of the movie,” Francis revealed, which again, tells anyone who read the books a lot. All I’m saying is YES, #TEAMPEETA. (Sorry for the spoiler, kinda).

Jennifer got a bit sentimental when talking about saying goodbye to Katniss, “I’ll never really say goodbye to her. I feel like it’ll always be a part of me.” She also clumsily gave Katniss credit, saying she hopes Katniss’ character rubbed off on her: “She’s brave and I’m an actress… What I have in my head is actually pretty interesting and there’s no way I’m going to be able to get it out. Something was kind of bestowed on Katniss in a way the same as saying yes to these movies was on to me. I’d like to hope that some of the leadership —you guys, I haven’t done interviews in like a year.”

The cast also tried to do the Mockingjay whisle… and failed. Liam belted out the X Files tune instead.

With the exception of a couple of superhero movies earlier in the summer, the summer block buster has been struggling, but “The Wolverine” is looking to end the losing run for big budget films.

Marvel and 20th Century Fox’s newest superhero film earned a strong $4 million on its opening night in North America, which began at 10 p.m. Thursday. According to The Hollywood Reporter, early audience tracking shows the movie opening in the $65 million-plus range domestically. The Los Angeles Times is predicting numbers in $75 million to $80 million range. The numbers are even stronger overseas, where it is rolling out in a slew of markets coinciding with the North American launch.

Fox spent just under $120 million on “Wolverine,” a pretty good number for a superhero movie.

Other more expensive block busters that have come out this summer such as, The Lone Ranger,” “After Earth, “and “R.I.P.D.” have not had the turnout expected and received harsh critic reviews, but superhero films have continued to keep audiences entertained. Two of the top grossing films since May are “Iron Man 3” and the Superman reboot “Man of Steel.” (“Despicable Me 2″ just recently beat out “Man of Steel,” but Gru can also be considered a superhero right?) Hollywood.com reports that movie attendance is down about three percent this year, while ticket sales are off about one percent.

“The Wolverine” was directed by James Mangold (“3:10 To Yuma”, “Walk the Line”) and stars Hugh Jackman returning to his role as the Wolverine—also known as Logan. It starts off some time after the events of “X-Men the Last Stand.” Logan is in turmoil from having killed Jean Grey and has decided to live alone in the woods. However, he’s pulled back into the superhero world when a Japanese man he saved during WWII requests to see him on his deathbed. The man offers Logan the opportunity to give up immortality and save him from death in exchange. He also asks that Logan protect his granddaughter.

Jackman first played the clawed mutant in 2000’s “X-Men.” The film went on to gross nearly $300 million worldwide and prompted studios to take on more films based on comic books. His character appeared in subsequent “X-Men” sequels, but Wolverine first took center stage in the 2009 spinoff “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” Unfortunately, neither fans nor critics enjoyed Logan’s first solo appearance. Luckily, the new film is already faring much better. “The Wolverine” has a 67 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 80 percent fan rating thus far.

Jackman will also be featured in “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which is set for release next summer. It will be his seventh time playing Logan.

Last year at Comic-Con, Marvel unveiled its plans to make a Guardians of the Galaxy film and gave a sneak peak at some concept art, this year they sweetened the deal by introducing us to the cast members. Marvel invited a few select members of the press to a small press conference after the larger Hall H panel to discuss the new project.

Even though the movie just started filming two weeks ago, the cast and director were eager to tell the world just how cool it will be–and cast member David Bautista wanted the chance to tell everyone he would win in a fight with the Hulk.

Before, they got into comparisons of the different Marvel franchises, the first thing people wanted to know was who else would be cast in the film.

“Is there any chance we might hear soon about Rocket Racoon or Groot?” a reporter asked.

“Soon,” director James Gunn said.

“like casting anytime soon?” the reporter repeated.

“Pretty soon.”

“Nowish?”

“Not nowish, tomorrow… next weekish, next monthish. I don’t know soon,” Gunn said.

Since not a lot of people are familiar with the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, the next question was about the overall premise of the film.

“Really Guardians is about a family coming together and it really is about a group of individuals who have acted selfishly throughout their life and learning something about themselves that makes them heroes,” Gunn said.

The first questions were really just formalities. What everyone really wanted to know about were the rock hard bodies in the film (Chris Pratt, David Bautista, Michael Rooker etc.). People were especially curious to know how Pratt, playing Star-Lord, transformed his body in such a short amount of time. The actor lost 40 pounds and gained a ton of muscle in just six months.

“Oh man it was like a combination of, you know about six months of just going after it. A combination of different things, lifting weights, cardio and really strict nutrition. I mean it’s really boring stuff,” Pratt said. “But, basically I cried like 40 pounds off and the rest was being hungry and running a lot.”

“He’s being very disciplined. His birthday was three weeks ago, four weeks ago, I had to be there, they brought out a tray of vegetables that spelled happy birthday,” producer and Marvel executive Kevin Feige chimed in.

“Yeah, and if there was one that was sharp I would have used it to cut my wrists,” Pratt said as the audience laughed. After a short pause he added, “that’s not, you shouldn’t make jokes about suicide that was seriously inconsiderate.”

WATCH THE CLIP:

(apologies for the shaky video, our camera guy forgot his tripod, fail.)

In pure comic-book-nerd fashion, another reporter asked David Bautista whether or not his character, Drax the Destroyer, could beat the Hulk or Thor in a fight.

“I would have to say yes on that,” Bautista said.

“Have you seen his hands for the love of God? They’re like this big. Like if it’s raining I just have Dave put his hands over my head,” said Zoe Saldana who plays Gamora.

It’s that kind of confidence that is helping the cast win over fans quickly. When someone asked if they were intimidated by taking on fairly unknown roles with so many other very popular Marvel franchises already established, they answered with a mixture of sarcasm and gravitas.

“No there’s nothing intimidating about 200 people looking at you at a press conference,” Pratt said sarcastically. “This is easy, I’m not scared. Oh yeah, that’s fine, yeah being at Comic-Con and answering questions about comic book movies is super easy… I don’t know, anyone else?’

“It’s exciting! Of course you’re nervous, I would be cautious to use the word intimidated because I don’t want it to be interpreted like I feel less or inferior,” Saldana said. “I feel very excited to be doing a Marvel family of superheroes and I do believe that Guardians have bigger powers in a way and if we were up against like Captain America or Thor we would totally kick his ass.”

After years of making huge Comic-Con appearances, fans know to expect big sneak peaks and great entertainment from Marvel and this year was no different. Most of the big reveals happened in the giant Hall H panel, but there were some great gems to be found in the more quaint and cozy Marvel press conferences.

Anthony Mackie opened up the “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” conference by asking everyone “How many of you guys saw the clip in the big room?” To which the room responded with loud shouting and grunting–Mackie did not realize the press conferences either happen right after or during the panels and that most reporters in the room did not see anything from the larger panel. Samuel L. Jackson jumped in to save his co-worker by telling everyone “he’s never been here before.”

Mackie made a quick joke and the room moved past the slip up in no time. Then the questions began. The first question went a little like this, “What sort of things are we going to see that maybe the audience will not be expecting?” Everyone looked around at each other for a second or two and Jackson jumped in again saying, “that’s on the talking point list of things we can’t talk about.”

Everyone laughed, but considering how big of a franchise Marvel is and that they were in a room filled with reporters, he probably wasn’t joking. Director Joe Russo interjected and gave the audience a vague idea of what the film would be like.

“You know uh, I think the movie is very different in tone than the first film. The first films was sort of a wonderful love letter to the original Captain of the time period. The Cap is now in the modern world, the movie’s a political thriller and in order to be germane to that tone we wanted a movie that’s modern that’s edgy and that’s as aggressive as it could be…”

WATCH THE CLIP:

Aside from the questions the cast couldn’t answer, there were also a few questions the cast didn’t understand (neither could most in the audience), but that was when most of the hilarity ensued. The final question of the conference went like this:

“I’m just curious, does anybody have any input, you know when the writers are writing and you want them to continue…”

“Downey!” Yelled Jackson

“I’m sorry?” the reporter asked.

“Downey has input in everything, we have no input. It’s all about Bob.”

“… So my question was…”

“So my question was, how much input does everyone have?” repeated Captain America himself, Chris Evans.

[laughs]

“No my question was is everybody concerned whether or not everyone’s going to like the second one as much as the first or you know it’s just as good?”

“That’s not our problem, that’s somebody else’s problem, Joss has written is already. I don’t think we’re concerned about that,” Jackson said.

“Are we?” Scarlett Johansson asked through a laugh. “Are you asking what part of the development, like how much we’re involved with the characters in this film? Is that the question?”

“No!” said Jackson. “In this film or the Avengers film?” He asked trying to clarify even further.

“The first film,” the reporter said.

“The first Cap or the first Avengers?” Evans asked with a very bewildered look on his face.

“The first Cap,” said the reporter.

“The first Cap?” Evans repeats.

“We weren’t in the movie,” Jackson yelled.

“These guys weren’t in the first Cap bro,” laughed Evans.

“I was there for like three hours, the last day,” Jackson said.

“You can get the DVD, it’s pretty good,” Mackie chimed in.

It seems as though not everyone in the room came fully prepared to ask questions, or maybe we were all a little starstruck? Who knows, but in between all the awkwardness reporters were able to get some information from the cast. For example, Evans revealed that Captain America is “with it” now.

“He knows how things work, he has a cell phone,” Evans said. “So we’re not just doing that one note, we’re trying to find humor in other places, thanks to Mackie in large part. He’s really good, he’s a funny guy.”

“I disagree,” director Joe Russo said sarcastically.

Sebastian Stan also revealed a little bit about the return of his character Bucky Barnes, now known as the Winter Soldier.

“In a sense he’s very similar to Rogers [Captain America] in that he’s another lost man in this new world so it’s a new journey for him, he’s just discovering about his own identity and sort of his role in this new world in his own way,” Stan said. “For me it was just sort of how was I going to tie that to what we’ve already seen in the first film and still recognize the same person in the end.”

Stan was referencing how his character returns to the franchise when it is revealed that he too was frozen in stasis for more than 50 years and comes back to join his pal Captain America in modern times (pal is a loose term, he may or may not be the villain this time around, depending on how closely the script follows the comic).

New cast mate Emily VanCamp was also on hand to talk about her character and taking on a new kind of role. Well, kind of, she couldn’t really say much.

“Um you know, I can’t reveal too much about the character, but I think people have a certain idea of who I’m playing and what I’m meant to be playing, but I think they’ll be surprised at how we introduce this character,” VanCamp said. “Compared to other things that I’ve done a lot of it’s been a bit different to this. It was certainly a challenging experience, an exciting experience. I had so much fun playing this part, but you know I can’t say too much about how we introduce her because I guess you just have to go see the movie, but it was a great experience.”

VanCamp’s Imdb page lists her as Agent 13, also known as Sharon Carter, a S.H.I.E.L.D agent and Captain America’s love interest. At the press conference she was listed as playing Kate so we really don’t know much about her character. VanCamp did reveal that there is definitely a bit of a spark between her and the Cap.

Overall, we don’t really know what to expect from this film, other than it will probably make a TON of money, the Cap has a cell phone, and Robert Downey Jr. is kind of in charge of all things Marvel.

‘Man of Steel” packs quite a wallop. A few too many wallops, as it turns out.

But that doesn’t seriously sully this latest Superman movie, which is delivered with a less-cartoony tone than one might expect from director Zack Snyder (“300,” “Watchmen,” “Sucker Punch”). This is a familiar tale told well, with effective time shifts, enough angst to feel modern and plenty of eye candy.

It is essentially a retelling of the 1978 “Superman” movie, the origins story that comic fans learn early on. But unlike other recent reboots, which wait less than 10 years before starting over, it’s been 35 years since Superman’s beginnings have played out on screen. Needless to say, this doesn’t feel rushed. Especially since special effects and computer animation have grown so outlandishly in those years.

We all know the basic elements of the story. Superman is born as Kal-El on the planet Krypton right before it is about to explode. In this version, Krypton’s demise is caused by draining the planet of its natural resources. Obviously, Jor-El could not let his newborn son just die, so he arranged for his son to fly to far-off Earth in a small space ship.

Imprisoned in a black hole of sorts for all-around nastiness just before Krypton blows up is General Zod (Michael Shannon, every bit as good as he should be) and his minions. Why they aren’t forced to stick-around for the blow-up party is anybody’s guess.

Kal-El does indeed land on earth, where he’s found and raised by the goodhearted Kents (Diane Lane, Kevin Costner) and given the name Clark.

Clark/Superman (played by the amiable and chiseled Henry Cavill) is raised carefully and lovingly, his secret powers kept appropriately secret except, whoops, when he uses his superhero strength to rescue a bus full of school children and other mishaps

His need to help people coupled with his fear of being found out kind of turn him into the ultimate loner. Clarke is America’s most hidden immigrant, and so he goes wandering about for a while, even growing a super-beard.

But of course Zod and friends somehow break out of their prison and come a’hunting for Kal-El. So Clark Kent is forced to face his density, sorry, destiny, and protect humankind.

Certain elements are missing here. Jimmy Olsen is nowhere to be found (thankfully) and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne), editor of the Daily Planet, is mostly just an unneeded distraction. Lois Lane (Amy Adams), however, discovers Clark’s secret early and is in on most of the action.

“Man of Steel” has some super-brooding, but nothing approaching the laid-on anguish of the recent Batman movies; Superman has concerns but he’s basically an upbeat guy.

And the movie’s super-stunts, of which there are many, have something of a real-world grittiness to their unworldliness. The film does not seem to have been painted.

But Snyder’s fight scenes at the end are just a little too much, as Supe and Zod do seemingly endless battle, destroying buildings and causing explosions along the way. At first it’s thrilling, then it just gets exhausting. It seriously seems to go on for more than 40 minutes.

Oh, well — nothing succeeds like excess when it comes to summer movies. What’s surprising about “Man of Steel” is that it holds that excess in until the end. Up to that point, it’s a modern myth retold in computer-age visual terms. It may not be super, but it’s pretty good.

Nothing enhances a moving going experience more than a good score. The visuals in a movie can be stunning, the cinematography can be flawless, but if you think about it, an argument can be made that the staying power of a great movie resides in movie’s music score being relevant.

Think of some of the best movie scores throughout the history of cinema: “Star Wars,” “Doctor Zhivago,” “ Jurassic Park,” “Back to the Future,” “Forrest Gump” and the list goes on. The ability of a score to recreate a fan’s connection with a movie when listening to the music by itself is a crucial aspect in film, and something that has gotten away from Hollywood in recent years.

If someone were to play you the main theme from any big blockbuster movie from the last half-decade, would you be able to pick out what movie that theme was from? Sure there are easy ones to pick out such as Iron Man. The original music by Black Sabbath was practically built in to that franchise. But if you were to partake in a movie score “Pepsi challenge,” would you be able to pick out the main theme from your favorite movies? Marvel’s “The Avengers” is nearing a Billion and a half dollars worldwide and counting, yet the main musical theme for that movie isn’t memorable. If you were to play the score for fans that had seen the film multiple times they probably wouldn’t be able to tell you what movie it was connected to.

We had a chance to sit down with some of the TV and film industry’s up and coming musical talent at CW3PR’s “Behind The Music With CW3PR: Perfect Sound for TV and Film” on the final day of Comic Con 2012 to talk about the film industry’s growing ambivalence towards musical scores.

Among the interviewees were Danny Jacob, the composer for Disney’s mega-hit animated series “Phineas and Ferb,” iZLER, the composer of ABC’s hit suspense series “Revenge”, and Trevor Morris, the Emmy nominated composer from Showtime’s “The Borgias”, and “The Tudors.”

Aaron Jacob, son of Disney composer Danny Jacob and who also provides vocals on some of Disney’s ‘Phineas and Ferb’s’ tracks, said this about one of the most renowned composers to ever work in the film industry, “you can hum the first three notes of any John Williams score and say that’s ‘Jaws’ or oh, that’s ‘Star Wars’.” And he’s exactly right! John Williams is a master at giving life to the score of a movie. Most, if not all of his music has the ability to stand on its own. Even the casual fan knows the beginning sequence to “Star Wars.”

Of course not every movie score can be like “Star Wars” in the sense of how iconic and identifiable it is. The question still remains however; do the recent musical scores of large-scale movie productions lack a musical signature?

iZLER, the composer for ABC’s hit TV series “Revenge” agrees to an extent, but provides a more in depth analysis to this question: “Musicality aside, it has a lot to do with the project you’re involved with,” and what “makes John Williams such a genius is that the music can not only stand up by itself in the film, but you can also listen to the score as a piece of music.”

The upside for a music score is always going to be tied to the magnitude of its project. In other words, had the theme for “Star Wars” been used for something on a smaller scale, it likely would not have turned into one of the most iconic movie scores of all time.

“I really think (being iconic), the hugest thing is melody for me, which is where every emotion I know as a composer comes from and I think that is the one thing you can’t teach, I really do. I think there are some people that have an incredible instinct for it, like Williams does and some people don’t. Some people are very adept composers, they’re great orchestrators, but they don’t separate themselves from the pack.”

Morris, composer for Showtime’s “The Borgias” agreed with iZLER, saying “music and its ability to have a life on its own and a good melody is really what separates the men from the boys.”

The two composers agreed that it’s a composer’s ability that makes a score standout. So are these movies being assigned to the wrong people on the film industry’s biggest stage? While iZLER and Morris make valid points on some people having a natural talent for melody, it’s hard to imagine that “The Avengers” composer Alan Silvestri, a legend within the industry whose composing credits include such films as, “Back to the Future,” and “Forrest Gump,” doesn’t have it anymore. The issue at hand is the film industry getting caught up with a movie’s visual enhancements and getting away from how important a musical signature is to a movie franchise.

iZLER hit the nail right on the head when he said “I think there are some directors who respond to music in different ways to others, some like the music to almost sort of melt into sound design, it’s something that becomes musical wallpaper and it’s certainly functional.”

Today’s movies may be visually stunning, but when you talk about movie scores being memorable, production teams for the most part are missing the mark. Is it the fault of the composer, the director, or has the evolution of sound design in movie productions hindered the ability of movie scores to obtain a distinguishable musical signature relative to their films? Let us hope that composing a legendary movie score isn’t becoming a lost art.

Disney kicked off the first day of Comic-Con with a special press conference promoting three of the studio’s upcoming movies, “Frankenweenie,” “Oz the Great and Powerful,” and “Wreck-It Ralph.”

The first conference of the day was for “Frankenweenie,” Tim Burton’s newest animated feature. It is an adaptation of a short Burton made nearly 30 years ago. The film is entirely in black and white and uses stop animation technology. Writer-director Tim Burton, producer Allison Abbate, producer Don Hahn and the voice of Edgar, Atticus Shaffer attended the conference

Take a look at the just released Comic-Con homage trailer along with some quotes and clips from the press conference.

Q. It seems like you bring back a dog in almost every one of your children’s films. Why is that?

A. Tim Burton: When you’re young, it’s the first kind of pure relationship you have. It’s something that connects right to your heart. I was lucky enough to have a special pet that I had that kind of relationship with. Yeah, the whole kind of Frankenstein element is sort of wish fulfillment in that kind of way. I always found those movies like Frankenstein kind of emotional. So it seemed like a fairly natural connection to combine the two.

Q. Since we’re at Comic-Con, do you have any desire to take any of these properties or anything original and write/draw your own comic? How do you feel about the convention?
A. Tim Burton: It’s amazing that it’s [Comic-Con] come from like the Holiday Inn to this. Also, it’s just fun to see Halloween in July. It’s great. It’s something that’s very special about this place.

Q. What character would you dress up as [at Comic-Con]?

A. Don Hahn: I’m in costume right now.

Tim Burton: I’m actually dressed as a human being

Frankenweenie press conference clips:

The “Oz the Great and Powerul” conference started immediately after “Frankenweenie.” Director Sam Raimi, cast members Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams, and producer Joe Roth attended the panel.

The movie is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” that focuses on how the wizard (played by James Franco) ended up in Oz and became so powerful.

Q. What lessons did you learn making Drag Me to Hell, and the limited audience it had?
A. Sam Raimi: I learned a lot from every movie that I make. I learn what not to do. I make 1000 mistakes. I’m painfully aware. It’s not like you have to recognize [that.] I’m always aware where I make wrong moves. I learn lessons and went forward with this picture with those 1000s of lessons from that picture. The type of comedy that film was, that dark comedy, is just a completely different thing from this film. This is a very straightforward family picture. I would say it’s a classically Disney movie. It’s about the characters, their interactions, the friendships they made. Some characters are sinners. They hurt others. It’s about how those sins can grow. It’s about finally recognizing the things you do in this world have consequences. How to be the best person you can be is really the story of this film.

Q. Sam Raimi how was it working with two of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood? And ladies what was it like working with Sam?
A. Sam Raimi: [Growls flirtatiously at the question of working with them] Rawrrrrr. It’s great. It’s great to work with them because they’re great actresses. As beautiful as they are, that would become meaningless if they weren’t brilliant actresses. They both have complex roles, complex interactions with other characters in the piece and they just do a beautiful job performing them. It’s very funny and realistic, and they’re fun to watch. And yes, not hard on the eyes.

A. Mila Kunis: Sam is amazing. I would do craft services for Sam if he asked me to.

Finally, Disney ended the day with a press conference for “Wreck-It Ralph,” starring John C. Reilly, Jane Lynch, and Sarah Silverman.

The movie follows a video game villain who desperately wants to be a good guy. He decides to sneak into other games in order to make a fresh start, but inadvertently causes more trouble.

John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, director Rich Moore, and producer Clark Spencer attended the conference.

Q. What were some of your favorite video games as a kid?
A. John C. Reilly: Well, I am dating myself by saying this but I was the test audience for Space Invaders. I remember that was the first game that wasn’t a pinball game. I spent a lot of money on some Space Invaders in the form of quarters. But I have a family now, so I don’t have a lot of time to play video games. That’s probably a good thing.

Q. For those who aren’t familiar with video games and these famous characters, how will you introduce them?
A. John C. Reilly: The main characters of the flick are from games that are made up for the movie.
And we explain them, so you don’t need to know anything about video games to appreciate the journey the characters take.
