Fresh off the news that “Extant” won’t be back for a 2016 summer season, CBS announced they’re ordering 13 episodes of Steven-Spielberg-produced mystery series “American Gothic.”

The new series will be the latest thriller to hit the small screen. And, based on what we know so far, it might give Ryan Murphy and his “American Horror Story” series a run for its money. (Though we’re hoping it doesn’t rely on gore as much as Murphy’s show.)

The show follows a prominent Bostonian family attempting to shred themselves of the malevolent gossip surrounding their family tree. The rumor mill began after the chilling discovery that their recently deceased patriarch was linked to a string of murders spanning decades. What could be worse than that? Oh, maybe the growing suspicion that his accomplice is a living member of the family. Yikes…

“American Gothic,” is being produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Television and written by award winning writer Corinne Brinkerhoff (“The Good Wife,” “Jane the Virgin”). Brinkerkoff will also executive produce alongside current Amblin producers Justin Falvey (“Smash,” “Under the Dome”), Darryl Frank (“The Americans,” “Falling Skies”), and James Frey.

“With ‘American Gothic,’ Corinne Brinkerhoff has created the perfect CBS summer mystery, filled with suspense, intrigue and an explosive ending that will leave you breathless,” said CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller. “It feels like a compelling summer novel that we can deliver to our viewers in 13 one-hour chapters.”

While this upcoming show might excite Spielberg enthusiasts, fans of “Extant” and “Under the Dome,” might not share the same enthusiasm. CBS opted to end each show after only two and three seasons respectively. If we’re being honest, we’re a little worried about the success of “American Gothic,” since the aforementioned series were also produced by Frank and Falvey. We’ll wait for more details on casting before making any decisions on this one.

American Gothic is scheduled to premiere in summer 2016 alongside the second season of ‘Zoo,’ based on the James Patterson novel, and the new “comic-thriller” “BrainDead.” We should expect to start seeing teasers sometime in early spring.

After blessing us with the hilarious sketch comedy show “30 Rock” and the latest Netflix breakout sitcom, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” Tina Fey is at it again –because, she’s the queen of comedy.

Tina Fey, along with screenwriter Robert Carlock (“Friends,” “30 Rock”) and screenwriter/producer Jack Burditt (“The Mindy Project,” “Frasier”), are developing a pilot for an unnamed CBS comedy show.

The script, written by Burditt, follows an athlete who unexpectedly retires and somehow drives his family and friends insane. While we don’t have any details beyond that, we’re predicting this new comedy will be an Emmy contender in the future. The talented trio have worked on over 30 series and films throughout their careers. And, Fey and Carlock are already a dynamic duo in their own right. They executive produced NBC’s “30 Rock” together and were the creators of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” Burditt wrote and executive produced for both of those shows and also created the current CBS comedy, “Last Man Standing.”

One thing that did strike us as odd is that this show will live on CBS instead of NBC. For reasons unknown, CBS won the bid and will definitely reap the benefits from this new show.

Summer, the season of sand, surf, and sun… we’re sad to see you go, but with all the upcoming TV goodness in the weeks ahead, we say –good riddance! It’s time to get your onesie — or Snuggie® — out because the fall TV season is upon us.

While there are a plethora of shows to start and continue watching, there are six shows in particular that had us experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. Let’s take a look at the six addicting shows that will have us reuniting with our couches very soon.

1. “Empire,” FOX.

Season Premiere: September 23, 9pm ET/ 8pm CT

Now that the head Lyon is in prison, who will take the throne of Empire Records? Cookie, along with her three sons Andre, Jamal and Hakeem, battle it out for control of the company while hosting #FreeLucious concerts to benefit the patriarch. Isn’t that such a lovely family dynamic? Season 2 promises more romance for both Cookie and Hakeem, a darker side of Jamal, and several celebrity guest appearances (Vivica A. Fox as Cookie’s sister? Hell yeah!).

2. “How to Get Away With Murder,” ABC.

Season Premiere: September 24, 10pm ET/ 9pm CT

Viola Davis is back as the lead character (Annalise) of this ABC thriller and now has a new murder to solve. We know who killed Lila, but who the heck killed Rebecca? We discovered Frank, Annalise’s right-hand man, was hired to kill Lila by Sam, Annalise’s husband. Now that Sam is out of the picture, we can’t suspect him nor Frank. We know from the trailer that Annalise confronts the killer, now we just have to wait an entire flashback-filled season to unmask the murderer.

3. “Gotham,” FOX.

Season Premiere: September 21, 8pm ET/ 7pm CT

The show had a rough start in terms of dialogue and plot, but it definitely improved towards the end of the inaugural season. Jim Gordon is now a fallen hero of sorts and turns to Penguin for counsel (nothing like a criminal to help you in a time of need, amirite?).

We’re sad that Fish Mooney (played by Jada Pinkett Smith) and her fierce nails won’t be returning for season 2, but there are new villains to look forward to—the Joker and Mr. Freeze. Let’s just hope FOX’s version of Mr. Freeze is NOTHING like the Arnold Schwarzenegger version in 1997’s “Batman & Robin.”

4. “`black-ish,” ABC.

September 23, 9:30pm ET/ 8:30pm CT

When the show’s plot was released and advertisements appeared all over Los Angeles, we were a little worried. Thankfully enough, black-ish is a refreshing take on the nuclear family household and is a show we didn’t know we needed. There were no cliffhangers in this sitcom so we’re just looking forward to kicking back and laughing our asses off to some incredible one-liners.

5. “The Mindy Project,” Hulu.

September 15, available at start of day.

Don’t be afraid to admit that you cried tears of joy when Hulu announced that they picked up “The Mindy Project” for 26 more episodes. Before the show was taken off Fox we left off with Mindy’s pregnancy reveal and Danny jet setting to India to formally ask Mindy’s parents for her hand in marriage. This season will grace us with an adventurous Danny, Mindy’s interesting journey into motherhood, a half-naked Morgan (the usual) and celebrity appearances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (YES!). Take a look at the trailer below to see more.

6. “Scandal,” ABC.

September 24, 9pm ET/ 8pm CT

Now that ABC just released the first season 5 trailer, we are left salivating over all the juicy goodness that is sure to come in the new season. After the season 4 had Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) kicking Mellie (Bellamy Young) out of the White House and Olivia sharing a steamy kiss with him almost immediately after, we are pumped to see what will happen in the “Scandal” universe now that Fitz and Olivia (Kerry Washington) are officially together. And since we are very much team Jake (Scott Foley), we are anxious to see what will happen to his character now that he’s not rolling in the sheets with Olivia. If all the drama from last season didn’t already make you want to tune in, the NSFW season 5 trailer might just put you over the edge.

Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg are once again tied to a legen—wait for it—dary comic book TV series. The duo responsible for “Arrow” and “The Flash”, along with Marc Guggenheim (“Eli Stone,” “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters”) and Sarah Schechter (“The Flash,” “Pan“), have been hard at work on the CW’s next hit, “Legends of Tomorrow.”

Production on DC’s “Legends of Tomorrow” officially began this week and to finish off a productive week of filming, DC Entertainment and The CW has released the first official look at Ciara Renée and Falk Hentschel as Hawkgirl and Hawkman!

Falk Hentschel and Ciara Renee as Hawkman and Hawkgirl, respectively.

The two star as Kendra Saunders (Hawkgirl) and Carter Hall (Hawkman), who are soulmates and reincarnations of ancient Egyptian royalty. Don’t fret, the show is more than just a story about two elderly lovebirds (see what we did there?).

The show’s main character is the charming Rip Hunter, played by British actor Arthur Darvill, who travels through time to assemble a team of heroes and villains to fight Vandal Savage (a 6,000 year old immortal who doesn’t look a day over 30) from destroying the world and time itself. In addition to old people and a time-traveling Brit, the show features White Canary (Caity Lotz), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), The Atom (Brandon Routh), and Firestorm (played by Victor Garber).

Renée already made a brief appearance on the season finale of “The Flash,” while Hentschel will make his debut on the network in the crossover episodes of “Arrow” and “The Flash.”

We’re definitely looking forward to seeing Routh play another superhero (having played Superman in 2006’s “Superman Returns”). “Prison Break” fans will also enjoy seeing Miller and Purcell reunited for another series. All in all, the show in jam packed with good talent and more DC superheroes than we’ve ever seen on a show.

“Legends of Tomorrow” is scheduled for 15 episodes with a midseason premiere in early 2016.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea and has his eyes set on relocating to Broadway? SpongeBob Squarepants, that’s who.

We’re sorry if you thought we were referring to Gary the snail. Spongebob is having a moment, this year the show got its first feature film based on the popular kid’s television show and 2016 will be known as the year of SpongeBob’s musical debut. The Nickelodeon produced show will run as a limited engagement July 7-13 at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre with the intent of making a proper Broadway appearance during the 2016-17 season.

If the idea of one of our favorite sea animals starring in his own musical doesn’t motivate you to buy a ticket, the musical lineup might. David Bowie, John Legend, TI, Aerosmith, and Cyndi Lauper have all signed on to produce pieces for the production. It’s like having a Now That’s What I Call Music –Spongebob edition CD that includes all your favorite artists throughout the decades. The best part is that the list of artists signing onto the project keeps getting larger, the most recent additions include Panic! At the Disco, The Flaming Lips and the Plain White T’s.

The SpongeBob Musical was co-conceived by Tina Landau (from Steppenwolf Theatre Company), who will also direct.

“I was drawn to this project not only for its wild theatrical possibility, but also because I felt SpongeBob, at its core, is a layered and hilarious ensemble comedy,” Landau said to Deadline. “We’re bringing the show’s fabled characters to life through actors — not prosthetics or costumes that hide them — and we’re deploying some unconventional stage craft that will prove that anything can happen in Bikini Bottom.”

If you’re wondering what a Spongebob musical will be all about Nickelodeon said the musical is, “a rousing tale of a simple sea sponge who faces the unfathomable” that will unleash “anarchic absurdity under the sea.”

SpongeBob Squarepants is a beloved animated children’s character and his quirkiness defined a generation of young TV viewers.

Cyma Zarghami, President of Viacom Kids and Family Group said, “this character has achieved a level of global popularity that we could never have imagined, and bringing him to Broadway is a way to give him a new platform, literally, to reach audiences of all ages who are looking for an engaging, funny and innovative musical theatre experience.”

We’ve seen “The Lion King,” “Shrek,” and “Beauty and the Beast” on Broadway, will this be the next hit to have come out of our animated favorites? What other animated characters from your childhood would you want to see on Broadway?

It’s close to impossible to hear Wes Craven’s name without immediately picturing Freddy’s glove or the ghostface mask. Over the year’s Craven’s name has become synonymous with the characters he created –and we remember them together because Craven was astoundingly good at predicting which kinds of scares would hit us at our core. From gore to crass wit to mind-bending self-reference (he basically invented meta), no one invigorated the horror genre quite like Craven, who died Sunday of brain cancer.

Craven passed away surrounded by family members on August 30th at the age of 76. While we mourn the loss of this prolific director, we want to celebrate all the times he gave us goosebumps and made us wish we still slept with a nightlight. Here’s a look back some of Craven’s best spine-chillers.

Leave it up to Wes Craven to create a boogeyman so disturbing he essentially turns the sweet, melodic sound of children’s voices into a primordial calling card—and creates a long-lasting and irrational fear of children in many." alt="" class="slider-4220 slide-4223" />

The film initially follows two teenage girls headed to a rock concert looking to misbehave. They joke about "making it" with the band and try to "score" marijuana from strangers, all in the name of teenage fun, but the film quickly devolves into a twisted cautionary tale. The girls are kidnapped and murdered by a gang of psychotic convicts --just a short ways away from one of the girl's houses. Our senses are subsequently attacked by shocking mix of horror, exploitation, revenge and camp, and by the end of it all, you realize there's a lot of truth to Craven's saying that, “a horror film should make you feel like you are in the hands of a madman.” " alt=""The Last House on the Left" movie poster" class="slider-4220 slide-4205" />

Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s <del>Superman</del> Supergirl –the kickass lead female superhero we’ve been waiting for!

Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, producers of hit comic shows “Arrow and The Flash,” are at it again. The duo have teamed up with Allison Adler (Chuck, Family Guy) to create a comic book show centered on the 24-year-old cousin of Kal-El (Superman, in case you forgot), Kara Zor-El (AKA Kara Danvers, or Supergirl). The heroine is played by Melissa Benoist, who played Marley Rose on “Glee” and appeared in the critically-acclaimed film “Whiplash.”

In the DC Comics universe, 12-year-old Kara Zor-El escaped Krypton with the help of her parents at the same time as Kal-El. Like Kal-El, Kara was found and raised by a couple who eventually adopt her, the Danvers. She lived in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and concealed her otherworldly powers for the safety of herself and her family.

Twelve years later, Kara, now 24, comes out of the superhero closet (with tights and a skirt, of course) when she’s enlisted by the head of a secret government agency to help protect the citizens of her home, National City, against sinister threats. What threats, exactly? We’ll find out when “Supergirl premieres Monday, October 26 at 8:30 PM on CBS. The series will then move to its regular Monday 8 PM slot the following week, November 2.

Earlier this month at the Television Critics Association, CW President Mark Pedowitz expressed his regrets on passing on the opportunity to host “Supergirl.”

When asked about a potential crossover between “Arrow,” “Flash,” and “Supergirl,” Pedowitz said, “I leave that up to Greg Berlanti if they can make it work… I’m open to crossovers.”

While CBS chairman Nina Tassler was against it, it’s really the power of the nerds to get that win. If a crossover does happen, we hope that CBS will let “Supergirl” characters develop and establish a name for themselves among all of the comic book shows.

We’re excited to see a previously forgotten female superhero shine in a new TV series, but we are mostly relieved to see that she isn’t sexed up (Anyone remember Marvel Comics’ erotic Super-Woman?).

See for yourself in the trailer below:

Shonda Rhimes, the queen of ABC drama, has given us the amazing TGIT drama lineup we love, with shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away With Murder,” and as much as we love our Thursday dramas, Rhimes has another ABC project up her sleeve — this time it’s a comedy.

The show, titled “Splitsville,” was conceived by “Trophy Wife” creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins. Shondaland’s Betsy beers will also work on the show. So far all we know about “Splitsville” is that it will follow divorced residents of a suburban cul-de-sac who come together to raise their children.

Since Rhimes is typically known for her intense dramatic television shows, some fans were shocked to find out she would be working on a comedy. But, Beers assured that their expertise in screenwriting will help the new project work.

“We can definitely make it work,” Beers told Entertainment Weekly. “I started my career in comedy and Shonda also wrote comedies and started when she was a screenwriter. We’re really, really looking forward to the prospect of having one on a network sometime soon.”

We’re excited for a new show from Shonda and delighted that she’s venturing out into new territory. Here are a few guesses as to what the show will contain:

Kick-ass Female Lead: From a doctor who embraces her love for romance to a fierce lawyer/professor who knows how to get away with murder, Shonda Rhimes is known for her unforgettable female lead characters.

Scandal: Yes, it is the title to one of her hit shows and one of the main ingredients to her juicy drama shows. Since this will be a comedy show, we’re hoping any scandal will have us crying tears of laughter rather than agony.

Love Triangle(s): When the show is centered around divorced suburbanites, it’s definitely not far-fetched to think that a least a few of these divorcees will start sleeping with each other.

The premiere date of “Splitsville” has not been released yet but we’re sure it’ll generate a lot of buzz when it airs. Could this be the next big comedy? (RIP Modern Family?)

Tom Hardy is no newbie to DC Entertainment movies (Dark Knight Rises, anyone?), so producing the film adaptation of “100 Bullets” should be an easy transition for Bane, er… we mean Hardy.

Hardy, who recently starred in this summer’s “Mad Max: Fury Road”, is teaming up with New Line Cinema to produce the adaptation and rumor has it he may also star. With all the badass characters Hardy’s played throughout his career having him star would be beyond awesome!

The original comic follows Agent Graves as he presents victims of various crimes with a gun, the identity of the person who ruined their lives, and 100 rounds of untraceable bullets. It’s basically a “will they or won’t they” revenge story. The critically acclaimed comic, written by Brian Azzarello and illustrated by Eduardo Risso, was so well received during its 10-year run, it won several Eisner and Harvey Awards.

The full plot has yet to be released but our secret spies within New Line Cinema (just kidding, press releases do the trick) tell us that the movie will stay true to the comic books.

Hardy will produce the film with Dean Baker via the duo’s Hardy Son & Baker production shingle. Development on the project has already begun, with a script by Chris Borrelli, whose credits include the recent supernatural horror movie “The Vatican Tapes.”

We’re definitely excited to see Tom Hardy back in action, especially since we’re still coming down from the adrenaline high that “Mad Max: Fury Road” gave us.

“I need six hundred dollars. Six hundred and thirty,” aren’t exactly the words most granddaughters use to greet their grandmothers, but average isn’t the forte in this family.

Directed by American Pie’s Paul Weitz “Grandma” starts us off on what will become a family adventure when Sage (played by Julia Garner) shows up on her grandma’s doorstep.

Sage faces a common situation feared by many teens—pregnancy. She decides to enlist help from her feminist –and quite free-willed– grandma Elle (played by Lily Tomlin) to fix her predicament. (Isn’t that what grandma’s are for?)

Grandma Elle, however, already has a lot going on. We soon learn she’s a hard-as-nails lesbian poet who’s not yet over the death of her lover of 40 years and prior to Sage’s arrival she had just kicked out her much younger girlfriend/former student from her home. Then her granddaughter shows up asking for help with an abortion –it’s quite a day for Elle.

Anyway, Grammy’s broke –and she for some reason decided to use her credit cards as decorative wind chimes for her front porch– so she and Elle decide to visit old friends, lovers, and enemies in hopes of garnering additional funds. At one point, instead of a traditional visit to the bank for a loan, Grandma Elle reaches out to her tattoo artist for cash. Both grandma and granddaughter agree that mom (played by Marcia Gay Harde) should not be informed of this unpleasant surprise –so she’s not in the mix at this point.

The “sort-of” boyfriend involved in this conundrum proves to be nothing more than a sperm donor. Thankfully, for soft-spoken Sage, good ol’ Grandma Elle uses more than a few poetic words to teach him a lesson (that’s right, she has no qualms about hitting a teenage boy).

Yes, this is a sublime, comic journey, and a superb Tomlin has seldom been better. “Grandma” is a wry, moving family tale that provides a fresh take on the relationship between three generations of women and even though there is an abundance of laughs the film packs a serious punch. Full of painful memories of a deceased loved one, confusing pasts and hurtful decisions, “Grandma” has moments that anyone can relate to. Also, with a grandmother who’s a badass lesbian poet as lead, it’s hard not to love this movie.

“Grandma” premieres in theaters August 21, 2015.

Directed, produced and directed by: Paul Weitz

Starring: Lily Tomlin, Julia Garner, Judy Greer, Marcia Gay Harden, Laverne Cox

Our rating: A
